My challenge for the week, fellow Milwaukeeans, is to dine out at least twice. Why? Well, the answer is easy -- we need to support our restaurants. Local, national, regional, I don't care. I just want you to dine out more often.
Please know that no one put me up to this blog. But, I was inspired by the release of the new Downtown Dining Week information. You'll have to wait a while for this big event, but it's sure to another big hit. OnMilwaukee.com, of course, is a proud sponsor and an original partner in the event. Here are the details:
From May 28 to June 4, 30 Downtown restaurants will offer a special menu of three-course meals at $10 for lunch and $20 for dinner. Beverages, tax and gratuity are not included. No passes, coupons or cards are required to participate.
Since the event's inception in 2006, Downtown Dining Week has attracted over 100,000 diners to participating restaurants -- many to experience a restaurant for the first time. Last year, more than 45,000 diners participated in the weeklong event with 63 percent reporting a first-time visit to a participating restaurant. We'll announce restaurants and menus later this month.
Meanwhile, I ask that you dine out this weekend or next week. Just skip the brown bag, and do your little part to stimulate Milwaukee's great dining scene.

Holding "Dining Week" in June makes sense. You can't start an event on its own and expect it to be successful. Buy wrapping it with Riversplash and the "kick off of summer," restaurants see a huge bump and see success right away. January wouldn't work, try it if you'd like. No one says there only has to be one week.

This event should be held in January. That's the slowest time for most restaurants. There should also be some guidelines for diners at this event, i.e tipping, observing the prix frix menu, parking, unruly children, how to make reservations...but that's just my opinion. Support your local restaurants!!!!!

I have a problem with Downtown Dining week. First of all - the timing. Who DOESN'T want to go out and eat during the last week of May and first week of June. That is when we are ALREADY GOING OUT! Why not put this in the beginning of MARCH when the weather is okay? Or how about the Middle of April when we get our Tax returns? Or how about 3 weekends a year to spur business during all seasons? I am sure that the restaurants could use the business then instead of the beginning of summer when they are already busy. I know that I especially AVOID participating in Downtown Dining Drudgery because of the Downtown Dining Dirtbags that come out to get their nearly free meals, complain about service and portion sizes and then stiff the waitresses on tips. I have never seen most of these people at my favorite restaurants, but they pollute the scene during that week and create an absolutely appalling atmosphere for other regular patrons. Not to say that the idea isn't a good one, I just think that the timing and the types of people it has the potential of attracting are way off. I wonder how the restaurants feel about this? I know we are all looking to make more money, but is it worth scaring off your base for a week to get nothing but headaches? Please reconsider the format!

It is not my duty to eat out more often. I can survive without going out to eat. Restaurants however, cannot survive without people going out to eat. It is the restaurant owners duty to entice me to choose their place over another.

I challenge local restaurants to lower prices though. I went to Hooligans the other day and most of their sandwiches are close to $10. They need to be $7 or $8, but I was impressed that they had a "recession menu" with some items for $4...more places should do this to increase business!
