Join us on Saturday, July 22 for some lakeside munchies at the second annual OnMilwaukee Food Truck Fest. Choose from a menu of 20 trucks and enjoy the live music, games and entertainment. It's the biggest gathering of the best food on four wheels.

At OnMilwaukee, we believe in lifting up all voices and using our platform to support others’ dreams.  And that's what we hope to do for Dominic the Food Reviewer. When I first met Dominic almost two years ago, I was impressed by his passion, his curiosity and his interest in improving his writing. Over time,  I’ve not only enjoyed getting to know him better, but he has taught me as much as I have him. My hope is that you’ll not only enjoy reading Dominic’s reviews, but also glean understanding and joy from seeing the world of food through his eyes. -- Lori Fredrich, Dining EditorThis week I visited Nice Sandwiches, a local sandwich shop located in the old Schlotzky’s restaurant on Hwy 100. They serve freshly made sandwiches, wraps, pizza’s, sides and dessert.  It is located at 2705 S. 108th St. in West Allis.

I got the pleasure to meet up with the owner, Jane Ritenour. She grew up in the city of West Allis and even worked at Schlotzkys when she was fifteen years old. When she came home from college, she took over Schlotzsky's deli from the previous owner in 2008. Last year they wanted to create their own sandwich business and bring something special for the whole community. Ritenour told me that she really enjoys being part of the restaurant industry and loves the creative aspects that go into it. Nice Sandwiches opened in November, 2020.

Nice Sandwiches is a smaller shop and cafe with a few tables, stand up tables and two booths. It is a perfect spot to hang out at and enjoy a fresh made warm sandwich and a side of their mac & cheese. They also have a mural right when you enter the sandwich shop that is super colorful and detailed with buildings and community gathering places.

The shop offers eighteen different kinds of sandwiches, that include ham and salami, turkey and salami, chicken and bacon, roast beef and bacon, chipotle chicken avocado, BBQ brisket and so much more. They bake their bread from scratch every morning. There are so many options to choose from when you order. You will be able to find gluten-free and vegetarian options too.

While I was there, I tried the muffuletta that had genoa and cotto salami, smoked ham, mortadella, cheddar, provolone, parmesan, garlic butter, green olive salad, lettuce, tomato, red onion and dijon mustard on a a handmade toasted sesame seed bun.

You could really taste the mix of flavors and the meat in the sandwich was delicious. The smoked ham was just the way I like it. It was an enormous sandwich that was stacked with so many vegetables and different meats on it. On the sandwich, the mustard had a nice tang to it and the buns were nicely softened.

The sandwiches are creative and you can really tell they put a lot of effort in coming up with different ideas for the menu. I learned that muffuletta sandwiches are a New Orleans speciality. I ordered a small macaroni and cheese for my side, which I had with my sandwich.

It had a nice and creamy flavor and it melted in my mouth.

I would definitely highly recommend checking this hidden gem out, because the owner was super welcoming, kind and their food was great. When I go back I want to give the chicken and pesto a try.

Nice Sandwiches does carryout too, if you want to pick up a sandwich to go. They don’t have a big sign up for the restaurant yet, so it might be hard to see from the street. Jane said she’s working on getting a big sign. I hope you enjoy your sandwich at Nice Sandwiches as much as I enjoyed mine.
