Back in college, a few of the professors in my journalism / broadcasting classes used to try to scare students by saying that the job market was so grim that many of us would end up waiting tables or flipping burgers.
I always thought they were crazy... until now.
Thanks to the fine folks at George Webb restaurants, I'm going to take a shift as a server / cook's assistant and write about the experience as part of a series of stories we'll be presenting here at OnMilwaukee.com. I'll be working from 6-9 p.m. at 7401 W. State St., just across from Hart Park in Wauwatosa.
If you are in the neighborhood, please stop in for a cup of coffee, a bowl of chili, a delicious breakfast entree or one of Webb's famous hamburgers (thanks to the Brewers' victory over the Marlins last night, you can get 6 for just $5).
My friends Bob and Brian from 102.9 The Hog have had the honor of seeing a sandwich named after them. The Bob and Brian Bomber is no longer on the menu, though the folks at Webb's tell me people still ask for it now and then. I'm pretty sure both guys tried the sandwich at one point, but to the best of my knowledge neither guy ever served sandwiches at one of the restaurants.
Since I have no experience in the food service industry, I cannot guarantee that my work will be flawless. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I may seem clueless. Whatever tips I make during the shift will go directly to the MACC Fund to help end childhood cancer.
If you are in the neighborhood, feel free to drop by for dinner. Or, just grab a coffee or a soda and watch the entertainment provided by a clumsy, clueless but well-meaning journalist turned server-for-a-night.

To really experience how people who make low-wages live, you have to do it like the woman who wrote "Nickel and Dimed".
