One of the main questions around town today was "how many people do you think will show up for the Gokey thing?" I guessed 20,000 at the Summerfest show alone, but wouldn't have been surprised if it was double that.
Summerfest offiicals report the number at the concert at around 25,000. Gokey cranked though several songs after introductions and accolades from the Mayor, County Executive, the MSO's Marvin Hamlisch, Rick Springfield, Don Smiley from Summerfest and others.
Before the mini concert at Summerfest's Harley-Davidson Roadhouse, an
overflow crowd filled the Riverwalk as Gokey posed for photos and
signed a few autographs at the site of the Bronze Fonz.
Gokey finished his whirlwind day at Miller Park.

Sandstorm- I agree, not sure what these two are complaining about?! He came home to sing a few songs he has done during competition. The whole idea is to sing other artists songs, but put their own twist on things. Also, win or lose, there is no jinxing him at this point. If he wins that would be great, but he will be set up with a recording contract either way.

cooler, American Idol always sends the last 2-3 contestants home for celebrations like this to film for the show. this was not "milwaukee's" idea. and to the person who complained Gokey didn't sing his own songs friday. he hasn't sang one song he wrote the whole season on Idol. it's not a songwriting competition. it's a ridiculous complaint.

Not being negative here, but isn't a lot of this stuff that happened Friday a little premature? It's still down to him and 2 others on American Idol. Not a fan of the show, but I'd hate to see the guy get jinxed.

You are correct bleeth, I do know very little about the music industry. I am not trying to be negative. I know that not all artists write their own songs. I am just making a statement about pop music and pop culture. There are plenty of Milwaukee artists that create their own art and are equally talented as Gokey, but get only 25 people showing up for their events. Gokey gets 25000 people to listen to him basically preform high end karaoke on the Summerfest grounds. How many people are making their plans every week to watch Gokey on Idol night, when they could be going out to support local businesses and local artist who know how to write a song.

The previous comment makes absolutely no sense! How many songs did Frank Sinatra write and originally perform?? Answer: very few. "New York, New York" Liza Minnelli, dozens of songs introduced by Fred Astaire, Broaddway and Hollywood musicals stars were later recorded by Sinatra. That guy knows little about the music industry. I really can't figure why anyone would actually go out of their way to point out anything negative about this. I guess the glass is always half empty to these people!
