"Bar Month" at OnMilwaukee.com is back for another round! The whole month of February, we're serving up intoxicatingly fun bars and club articles -- including guides, unique features, drink recipes and more. Grab a designated driver and dive in!
The votes are in and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Bars & Clubs, 2009. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all month long in the Bars and Clubs section of OnMilwaukee.com.
A good bartender is hard to find. Here in Brew City, suds slingers come a dime a dozen (they almost have to with the number of bars, taverns, clubs and pubs we have) and most of them get the job done.
But how many times in a night, a weekend, a month, do you belly up to the bar to place your order and not only walk away with a beautifully crafted cocktail, but also the rare but distinct feeling of being truly taken care of by your barkeep?
Perhaps it was the genuine smile, the lighting of your cigarette, the occasional "this one's on the house" surprise? Either way, some bartenders have got it, others don't.
And some stiff you on your change.
According to OnMilwaukee.com readers, patrons can check their fears at the door of Palomino, 2491 S. Superior St., and rest assured they'll find stellar service no matter whose shift it is.
The fun-loving staff is friendly, attentive and fast -- and very good about keeping up with the free touchdown shots during Packers games. Whether you're a regular or a newcomer, the Palomino people treat you as one of the gang.

I agree that Chad at Centanni is the bomb. Also Evan Barnes, Patrick from Elsa's, and Paul from County Claire.

I finally stopped at this place last night. Service was great. Especially the guy behind the bar. He was funny and quick with the drinks. Pretty decent beer selection, good menu. Smoky, but whatever, it's a bar. I'll be back.

The last time I was at Palomino was so bad I will never go back. Let me say however, that I am a bartender and a server and therefore know what to expect. I also may have high standards. But I do not apologize for that. They have good bar food and awesome atmosphere, but the service is so horrendous that I will never go back. We ordered two burgers (medium) and they came to our table 45 minutes later (well done). I would've grabbed my server to ask her where our food was, but she was nowhere to be found. We also had to walk up to the bar to grab more beer. My advice is- if you DO go to Palomino - sit at the bar. You might have a better chance of getting decent service. My vote is for the Newport!

Burnhearts? Wow! Only if there was a catagory for "worst" bartenders.
