The votes are in and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Eat & Drink, 2007. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all month long in the Bars and Clubs section of OnMilwaukee.com.
It's no surprise that OnMilwaukee.com readers picked Café Hollander as Milwaukee's best new bar. Café Hollander moved into the space formerly occupied by Gil's Café in early 2007 and easily filled Gil's shoes.
Café Hollander features a split smoking and nonsmoking dining section, and a comfortable, attractive bar with a good selection of Belgian ales offered in brand-appropriate glasses. Brunch-time customers covet their Bloody Marys as well.
Durng the warm weather months, outdoor drinking is the way to go at Hollander thanks to the the corner patio that's the ideal spot to see and be seen.
Created by the Diablos Rojos restaurant group, Hollander's food, drink and service are above average for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Popular menu items include the eggs Benedict, the blackberry turkey sandwich, Trader Tater Noshers (a nod to the iconic Coffee Trader that originally offered this appetizer / meal), filet mignon and more.
Whether you want to take the kids out for brunch, catch a quick bite before a show or drink the night away, Café Hollander can accommodate the situation, which is one of the reasons why folks love this place so much.

I love their fries with traditional mayo, but EVERY time I go there it is chilly, drafty. No matter where I sit I shiver and end up putting my jacket on. It's not just me either, I go there with friends and they say the same thing.

I do not think this is the appropriate place to take the kids. Leave them home. I am tired of kids in bars even though they serve food.

To applefreak: If you want great beer selection, then you might enjoy a trip to Roman's Pub (3475 S. Kinnickinnic Av.) or Palm Tavern (2989 S. Kinnickinnic Av.). You sound like someone who can appreciate some tasty and different beers, so I highly recommend you check those places out.

I've had a couple not-so-hot trips for food, but the most recent couple of times I've eaten there have been honestly pleasing. While I'm a little surprised it's taken the seasoned restaurant vets this long to get this place on it's proper feet, I think the place will become just as proper a restaurant landmark as all their previous joints.
