Milwaukee's best patio / outdoor seating, 2010: Barnacle Bud's

"Bar Month" at OnMilwaukee.com is back for another round! The whole month of February, we're serving up intoxicatingly fun articles on bars and clubs -- including guides, the latest trends, rapid bar reviews and more. Grab a designated driver and dive in!

The votes are in and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Bars & Clubs, 2010. Find readers' results in 50 categories, including an editors' pick, in this series of articles that run daily in the Bars and Clubs section of OnMilwaukee.com.

Even people who love Milwaukee generally concede that the city has one major flaw:

Beautiful weather is far too scarce.

Summer here is as good as anywhere in the world. Fall is lovely. Even winter -- at least after a fresh snowfall -- has a certain charm. But, the truly "nice" days and evenings seem fleeting -- which is why we maximize them as much as possible.

The concept of outdoor dining and drinking has taken off in the past decade or so, with Milwaukeeans clamoring to savor warm afternoons and evenings at establishments with waterfront locations or carefully appointed patios.

Recently, the race for Best Patio has yielded a different winner every year, but this year's winner, South Side hidden gem Barnacle Bud's, was the first to secure the title for the second year in a row.

Tucked away off the beaten path, this the no frills, workingman's waterfront patio can feel like a genuine escape from hectic city life, all without having to give up on beautiful views of the water and skyline.

When winter gives us the cold shoulder, warm yourself by thinking of sultry evenings at these spots.

Wow, very bad !! me and my family went about 3 years ago with our kids during the day for lunch ,I walked inside to ask for a high chair for my child, i was told by the owner " We dont have those, we dont want people thinking that this place is for kids ! we left. last night 04-15-2011, I decided to go with my wife and give it another try, The staff was nice, but the seating was horrible, everyone was on top of each other. the bloody mary my wife ordered was worst i ever tasted, she could not even drink it, it did not even look red, just straight pepper and hot sauce. The fish fry was not good either, 3 strips of fish that tasted like rubber and fries for 8.95 !! no thanks !! wont be back again.

I love relaxing and unwinding in industrial areas. Other favorites include sewage plants, manure pits, and brown murky rivers full of rust and syringes.

Never had a bad time at Bud's, never driven home from her either. I agree, the view is not great, but the place is a rollicking good time on a hot summer Saturday. Never had the food sober, so I can't properly comment.

Ale House is way better than Barnacle Bud's. The view at Bud's is so bad that it can't be ranked #1.
