Milwaukee's best bar for a secret rendezvous, 2011: The Safe House

"Bar Month" at OnMilwaukee.com is back for another round! The whole month of February, we're serving up intoxicatingly fun articles on bars and clubs -- including guides, the latest trends, bartender profiles and more. Grab a designated driver and dive in!

The votes are in and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Bars & Clubs, 2011. Find readers' results in 50 categories, including an editors' pick, in this series of articles that run daily in the Bars and Clubs section of OnMilwaukee.com.

Looking for a dark, quiet, out of the way place to enjoy an intimate evening with that special someone? According to OnMilwaukee.com readers, that place is in the heart of Downtown on a quiet little alley called Front Street.

This year, Downtown favorite The Safe House has unseated repeat winner At Random as your favorite secret rendezvous bar, Milwaukee!

Bay View's legendary At Random took second place this time around, three percentage points behind the winner.

While The Safe House is a popular destination, many of the visitors are from out of town, so they won't spot you on your tryst. Anyway, the bar has lots of dark corners and intimate spaces where you and your lovebird can coo the night away.

The editorial staff on OnMilwaukee.com selected Jamo's, a staff favorite located just north of Brady Street, for its intimate and dimly lit vibe.

OnMilwaukee.com editors' pick: Jamo's

Runners-up:

2. At Random
3. Bryant's Cocktail Lounge
4. Jamo's
5. Victor's
6. The Lobby Lounge (The Pfister Hotel)
7. Redroom
8. Centanni
9. Village Pub
10. Branded
11. Angelo's
12. New Yorker Bar
13. Two
14. Henry's

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Bryants was still listed amongst the top 4. I still fondly remember my first date with my late husband 46 years ago at Bryants. Brings a smile to the face of a 73 year old 'romantic'.
