"Bar Month" at OnMilwaukee.com is back for another round! The whole month of February, we're serving up intoxicatingly fun bars and club articles -- including guides, unique features, drink recipes and more. Grab a designated driver and dive in!
The votes are in and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Bars & Clubs, 2009. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all month long in the Bars and Clubs section of OnMilwaukee.com.
Once again, OnMilwaukee.com readers picked the spy-themed Safe House as Milwaukee's top theme bar.
The 43-year-old bar and restaurant features a trick entrance requiring a password, a cloak-and-dagger room and a menu featuring clandestine cuisine like the spy burger and a Bond's Bomb dessert. The bar features concoctions like the Spy's Demise, served in a Safe House pint glass.
The old school Milwaukee-themed Bomb Shelter came in second place. The décor is a tribute to the days when Milwaukee ruled the brewing industry.
OnMilwaukee.com editors' choice: Bomb Shelter
Runners up:
2. Bomb Shelter
3. At Random
4. Bryant's Cocktail Lounge
5. Monkey Bar
6. Cans
7. Kochanski's Concertina Bar
8. Foundation
9. Art Bar
10. John Hawk's Pub
11. Two
12. Baby Grand

The new Monkey Bar contains a lot less monkeyage. The Bomb Shelter is a great place. Theme bars....hmmm....Mollica's Key West Milwaukee is a beauty!

Hmmm, I think you were there on a bad night, sir. The last time I was at the Safe House, on Friday February 6 around 1030pm, it was packed from the tunnels to the rafters with 20 and 30 somethings....in fact, it seemed to be at or beyond its full capacity, with a deep line out to Wells Street. Who knew it was still such an it spot? Now that's some star power. Hats off to the Safe House for staying true to its theme and staying alive no matter what the economy!

The only time I went was during Harleyfest this past summer. That place was packed with out-of-towners who were totally into the place and having the blast. The food wasn't bad either. I'm in my younger 20's and I always forget the place is there.

While I do enjoy the Safe House and their house specialty drinks, I wish they'd get an injection of younger clientele. On my last visit there on a Friday night, the place was loaded with seventy-somethings.
