The votes are in and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Eat & Drink, 2007. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all month long in the Bars and Clubs section of OnMilwaukee.com.
Bar Louie Milwaukee, 1114 N. Water St., is the 20th location, nationwide, of the popular Chicago-based chain, and offers a variety of fairly-priced signature sandwiches, appetizers, deluxe burgers and entrees as well as everything that gives it its bar title -- handcrafted specialty cocktails, martinis and mojitos, and more than 20 domestics, imports and microbrews.
Sure, it's a chain, but it certainly does fit in well with Water Street's "drinking destination" reputation. Bar Louie also recently set up shop at the Bayshore Town Center, although OnMilwaukee.com food writer Amy Carlson says the two locations are vastly different:
"The Water Street Bar Louie location is distinctly a bar that serves food, while the Glendale location is distinctly a restaurant that also has a bar," she says.
"In other words, Bar Louie did its homework. Water Street does a great professional Downtown lunch crowd but at night, as we well know, it becomes more of a nightlife/bar crowd. Many of the eating options on that strip of Water Street rightfully cater to a drinking clientele, while Glendale caters to families and singles who are stopping for dinner after a long day of shopping."

Bar Louie is one of the worst bars in Milwaukee. Was there twice. When I flirted with the bar tender, service was okay. When my fiance' arrived we were invisible. The second time service was so bad, we ended up ordering drinks from one of the cocktails. We were sitting at the main bar at the time. There are better places within walking distance. Don't waste your time here.

The service is always horrible. The staff is unattentive, uninformed and unmotivated. The Happy Hour deals are the only reason to go. You get what you pay for. They could use some of the McGillycuddy babes.

WOW!..Bar Louie has some of the worst food and worst service i have ever had in milwaukee...thought the readers were better than that...or maybe its the same large group voting that had to show up and beg for their jobs to the city after the poor management almost forced the whole place to close down.

Of all the options available when attending a performance at the Marcus Center, while being able to park and walk, BL has the best to offer. Eagans is too expensive, the other pubs are simply smoky burger joints, the Lodge has a limited menu, and Rudy's is OK Mexican if you are in the mood for beans before a two hour play. I prefer service indoors at Bar Louie over the outside patio during the warmer months.....I think the outdoor customers are here for the beer and not the food as we have had inconsistent service outdoors. They also have some nice special prices on appetizers.....other than my season ticket performance nights, I am not a Water Street patron. But since this is a best "bar" nomination, I guess this opinion doesn't really matter.
