Bomb Shelter owner passed away

I am sad to report that Greg Landig, the owner of The Bomb Shelter, passed away this afternoon.

"He did some really great things for the community," said Diane Dowland, owner of the Monkey Bar, 1619 S. 1st St.

Apparently, Landig, who was 46, had a heart condition and was found in the bar around 3 p.m. today.

Landig, a collector of beer-related memorabilia, opened the popular Walker's Point bar in 2008.

I will update this blog when more information becomes available. In the mean time, deepest condolences from OnMilwaukee.com to Greg's friends and family.

The Milwaukee wake for Greg Landig will be held at the Best Place at the old Pabst Brewery on Sunday April 15th. More details to follow.

Pedal Tavern controversy

Three years ago, Derek Collins and Ryan Lloyd started Milwaukee Pedal Tavern, a 16-person "bicycle-powered party on wheels," that takes groups of people to multiple bars in the Third Ward and / or Walker`s Point. A seemingly growing group of individuals, however, find the "party on wheels" to be more of a "nuisance on wheels."

Totally organic bars: realistic or ridiculous?

As organic food seeps further into the mainstream, the focus is starting to shift to our other purchases. While some products` popularity -- the environmentally-friendly shampoos, the kitty treats, the laundry detergent -- remains marginal, other industries, like beer, wine and spirits, are finding an all-natural niche at bars that place an organic label above all others.

The Monkey Bar grows up at new, bigger location

Almost exactly six years ago, we introduced you to The Monkey Bar. Since then, "the monkey" has done a lot of growing up, culminating in a new look and feel in a new location that reopened officially last week.
