Featured bartender: Little Whiskey Bar's Samantha Schreier
Little Whiskey Bar, 309 W. National Ave., opened in April 2013. The blue-walled, one-room tavern has a friendly, corner-bar feel that, in part, comes from the energy provided by bartender Samantha Schreier.
Schreier, who formerly worked at the Horny Goat, spends four nights a week behind the bar slinging drinks, playing dice and chatting up customers – many of whom are her friends or have became her friends over time.
OnMilwaukee.com recently stopped into Little Whiskey Bar and talked to Schreier, who is 24, about the merits of Milwaukee, shopping at Woodman's, dinosaurs and more.
OnMilwaukee.com: How long have you worked here?
Samantha Schreier: About six months.
OMC: What do you like about working here?
SS: Good people come in here. There are a lot of my friends here right now. On the weekends, we have a lot of people who pop in after eating at a restaurant like La Perla. It's always fun. I really love Milwaukee. There are so many interesting people here.
OMC: Did you grow up in Milwaukee?
SS: I grew up in Oak Creek, where I've been living, but I'm moving to Milwaukee next week.
OMC: What would you change about Milwaukee if you could?
SS: The only thing I don't like is the winter. But there's nothing I can change about that. And the violence. There's too much of it. But that's everywhere.
OMC: What is your favorite drink to make?
SS: I like to experiment, make weird stuff. I mix a lot of vodka drinks.
OMC: What's your favorite drink to consume?
SS: A Soco Sour – Southern Comfort and sour soda.
OMC: Do you like beer?
SS: I love beer. Lakefront White is my favorite.
OMC: Do you ever have to cut off customers?
SS: Oh, sure.
OMC: How do you do it?
SS: It depends on how they act. If they're rude to me, then I say, "you gotta go." But I try to do it nice and say something like, "You want a water? Yeah, how about a water?"
OMC: How many piercings do you have?
SS: Just the ones on my lip, tongue and ears.
OMC: None that we can't see?
OMC: Where did you get your tattoos done?
SS: Solid State on KK.
OMC: Where do you want to travel someday?
SS: I actually don't travel. But I really want to go to Vegas. I went to Cincinatti this past football season for a Packers game.
OMC: Are you a big Packers fan?
SS: I am. I wasn't always. I actually hated the Packers for a long time. It wasn't until I started working at Horny Goat that I started getting into it. Prior to that, I didn't care.
Another thing I want to do someday is sky dive. I think it would be something really fun to do. It's a risk, but there are very few people who die from it. It sounds exciting,
OMC: Do you get hit on a lot?
SS: I do. It's weird. I had someone propose to me at 11 a.m. at Horny Goat. I started laughing. I wasn't sure how to take it. But sometimes I will just go with it if they don't look like a creeper.
OMC: What do you like to do when you're not working?
SS: I'm pretty much always working. I have a full-time job at Woodman's and I work here four nights a week.
OMC: People either seem to really love Woodman's or not like it at all. What's up with that?
SS: Most people who don't like it say it's because it's too big. They get lost. The number one complaint I get is that they can't find anything or there's too much of a selection. People don't always want 28 different kinds of peanut butter to pick from. But I like it.
OMC: Have you ever cleaned up puke?
SS: No and I really hope I never have to.
OMC: I've liked the music in here so far. Journey, Violent Femmes. Does this represent the kind of music you like?
SS: I like a variety. Random stuff. I like to piss people off and play Backstreet Boys in here and threaten to turn it into Boy Band Night. We have a lot of fun here. It's like a little family.
OMC: Are you from a big or small family?
SS: Pretty small. My parents were divorced before I was born.
OMC: Do you have or want kids?
SS: I don't have any kids and I want them someday but I like the party life. It might be one of those unexpected things that just happens.
OMC: Can I take your photo?
SS: Do I have to do anything fancy? Can I pose with my dinosaur?
OMC: No and yes. What's up with the dinosaur?
SS: I just really like them. They're cool. I wish I could see one today, although I obviously wouldn't want to get eaten by one.
