Maybe it's because the weather it beginning to warm, maybe it's because Bike to Work Week starts in three days (June 6-12), or maybe it's in part thanks to the $350 I just dumped into my car to replace a part I can't even remember the name of, but I've had biking on the brain a lot lately.

Last summer I got pretty into tracking my Gas-Free Commute via a Web site of the same name, and all the calories I was burning and money I was saving on gas was more than enough motivation to keep me cycling to work all season.

Well, today I write this bike-related blog fueled by completely different motivations. I was recently introduced to the Pedal Pub, which, for all intents and purposes of this blog, is one of the greatest entertainment devices ever created.

Here's the deal: The company supplies its own driver, and you supply everything else: friends, food, drinks and a bit of calf muscle. The tours include pub crawls, scenic rides, picnics and tailgating.

Unfortunately, this magical piece of machinery is located in Minneapolis, but I challenge some bike-loving entrepreneur to get this going here in Milwaukee. My guess is that it'd be a hit with the locals.

Come on; who needs BYO booze at Jazz in the Park when you can load 16 friends onto a shared bike and have some "slow fun" while eating, drinking and / or sightseeing?

Julie Lawrence Special to OnMilwaukee.com

OnMilwaukee.com staff writer Julie Lawrence grew up in Wauwatosa and has lived her whole life in the Milwaukee area.

As any “word nerd” can attest, you never know when inspiration will strike, so from a very early age Julie has rarely been seen sans pen and little notebook. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee it seemed only natural that she major in journalism. When OnMilwaukee.com offered her an avenue to combine her writing and the city she knows and loves in late 2004, she knew it was meant to be. Around the office, she answers to a plethora of nicknames, including “Lar,” (short for “Larry,” which is short for “Lawrence”) as well as the mysteriously-sourced “Bill Murray.”
