Marcel Davis and Cary McCoy have big plans for their new bar, Saylece's, 815 E. Locust St.

The business partners renovated the space -- formerly the Riverwest Commons and before that The Golden Nugget -- with fresh paint, new carpeting and updated fixtures. But according to Davis, this is only the beginning.

"This is a long-term investment for us," says Davis. "We have a lot of plans."

Saylece's is, first and foremost, a sports bar, but the venue also offers pool, darts, live music and karaoke on Wednesday nights. Bartender Sara Bulle says the bar will soon host poetry readings and a trivia night. Plus, Saylece's will sell food as soon as the kitchen construction is finished.

"The menu will have good sandwiches, homemade pizzas and, of course, a Friday fish fry," says Bulle, who tended bar at the now-defunct Game Time, 1118 N. 4th St., Sullivan's, 1227 N. Water St., and Hegarty's Pub, 1120 W. Wells St.

"We'd like to have a theme every night of the week," says Davis.

Later this summer, Davis plans to open a restaurant called London's, also in Riverwest. Although Davis, who is a real estate investor, lives in Wauwatosa, he picked the Riverwest neighborhood for his new businesses.

"This is a fun neighborhood where everyone's welcome, and that's what Saylece's is all about, too," he says.

"Saylece's is a blend of the middle names of McCoy's two daughters. Davis named the soon-to-open restaurant after his son, London.

Currently, Saylece's has Miller and New Glarus on tap, as well as a decent selection of bottled beers with an emphasis on micro beers. Davis says he plans to expand the selection of tap beer in the near future, and that the bar will host a Beer Fest in July.

Saylece's is sponsoring a Bacardi promotion this month that allows customers who buy a Bacardi drink to enter a raffle for a free sports jersey.

Every afternoon, the bar offers a happy hour featuring $2 domestic and rails, but Bulle says the signature drink at Saylece's is Jermiah Weed sweet tea flavored vodka and lemonade.

"It's 70 proof, so it's dangerous stuff," says Bulle. "In general, we're a very vodka-oriented bar."

Saylece's will be open during Locust Street Festival, June 14, and will host the bands Lost In A Name, Matthew Haeffel, Chapter 2, Quick 50 and Now You Have Audio.

"We're going to offer a lot of live music here, starting with Locust Street Fest," says Davis.

It keeps coming and coming. Shut the bass up on weeknights after say....1am? You are in a residential neighborhood and you are waking up people. Remember your liquor licence is up soon. Ill be there to make sure that you don't get renewed.

I have a front row seat to the drama every day. I'm glad I'm not the only one who realizes how bad this place is for the neighborhood. From the bass, to the drunken crass shouting, to the inconsiderate parking to the littered bottles and blunt wrapper packaging - not to mention the rude management, when confronted - it's only a matter of time... a nuisance is one thing, but how long until we have a more serious problem ? I hate to shoot down someone's dream when I am a small business owner myself, and a former nightclub/bar promoter as well, but this place is out of control, and getting worse, not better. They are NOT an asset to this neighborhood, and that's a shame considering how variety/diversity has usually been a positive force in Riverwest (chalk it up to bad management, and chasing the dollar, rather than a concept). I am documenting all the problems, and photographing what I can. It's time for them to shape up, or ship out ! Who's with me ?

Saylece's loves everybody, except those who help organize the farmers market next door! They demanded the sign for the farmers market be torn down. When approached about continuing the relationship the commons had with the farmers market regarding supplying electric power for the bands that play at the market, they said they would be happy to oblige, in exchange for several hundreds of dollars worth of advertising in the Riverwest Currents! I will support local businesses that act like local businesses, they can move their bar to their neighborhood and act like jerks.
