Underage adults in bars: yay or nay? (Updated)
If Sam Asad gets his way, the space most recently known as The Library Club, 1905 E. North Ave., will be a new bar and music venue that would allow 18-20-year-old college students to attend shows.
Asad, who owns Envy, 715 S. 5th St., will attend a hearing at City Hall on Tuesday morning to request a Performing Arts License (in addition to the Class B & Premise Entertainment License) which would allow him to admit underage adults to his yet-to-be-named new venue.
If granted the license, Asad says the venue would have a wristband system to identify the under-aged concert-goers and a highly trained staff that would receive a bonus if they caught underage drinkers.
In decades past, underage shows were common but have become much less frequent in recent years. What are your thoughts on this? Do college students need more places to hang out or is this just asking for trouble?
Stay tuned to OnMilwaukee.com for more information about the new venue when it becomes available.
New information became available since the time of this post. Sam Asad says the license request was rescheduled for a later meeting.
eagle3s - Still not getting your arguement. We allow 18 year olds to work for our country in the military, so we should allow them to drink alcohol. Don't see the connection. That's like saying we allow people to drive at 16, so we should allow them to drink at 16. One has nothing to do with the other. Most 18-20 year olds (apart from the less than .1% of our population serving in the milatary) are in high-school/college and not mature enough to handle the responsibilities of alcohol. These teens have not only been driving for less than 2 years, but are not allowed to have more than 1 teen passenger in their car until they are 18. At which time you want to let them start drinking. That is a recipe for disaster. I agree that had the drinking age never been raised to 21, our world would not have fallen apart. However, now that the age has been raised, it would create a world of problems to lower it again.
To photodavie... The draft has nothing to do with ENLISTING into our military....however being KILLED at 18 does reflect on this matter of 'underage' drinking.... "WASHINGTON (AP) Among the surging number of American troops killed in action in Iraq this month were five 18-year-olds. In the previous 13 months of the war, eight troops that age had died, of which two were killed in action. The five 18-year-olds listed as killed in action this month were all Marines, who typically are younger than the average soldier. The fifth, announced Thursday, was Lance Cpl. Marcus M. Cherry of Imperial, Calif. He died Tuesday in the Al Anbar Province that is the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force's area of responsibility."
Right, lets let 18 year olds (high-schoolers) buy alcohol. That will definately cut down on drunk driving and teens deaths. And for the record, we haven't had a draft in the US for nearly 50 years. So give the military service argument a rest.
my remark 'absurd' was meant for photodavie...sorry it was not sent that way....I maintain that we should change the Law..I also take offense to photodavie's remark 'get a fake ID'....
