Late last week, I wrote about a new radio station in Sacramento, Calif., that focuses on music of the '90s.
Nothing is official yet, but Milwaukee could be getting a little taste of the '90s, too.
I got an e-mail from this morning from an Entercom insider who thanked me for the nice piece and said I should keep listening. I didn't think anything of it until later in the day, when a local radio message board had posts about the same employee dropping hints on his Facebook page.
After logging on, I found a lot of subtle references to the decade, including song lyrics and some lines I heard used in the imaging for the original station in Sacramento.
In a follow-up e-mail, my pal at Entercom said I should check out the station's Web page tomorrow and included a couple more references to the '90s. He did, however, point out that a full station flip isn't on the agenda.
What's this mean? It's anybody's guess. Radio stations often "stunt" in order to change things up or give stagnant ratings a jump-start. As a whole, local music radio is struggling to survive as iPods explode in growth and satellite radio offers a wider, yet more specific variety, depending on a listeners' tastes.
In the meantime, let the guessing games begin. Kidd O'Shea and Elizabeth Kay kick off their morning show at 5 a.m. and our insider tells us that the Web site will be updated by then.
In the meantime, use the Talkback feature below to post your predictions or opinion on what Milwaukee radio needs.

I listen to some talk in the morning on the way to work. The rest of the day, it's all Sirius.

speaking of this dilemma... changing formats is like slapping a fresh coat of paint on something. May look different on the surface, but its still the same nuts and bolts underneath. If radio really wants to survive, it needs to start from scratch. It needs to be truly interactive. No more of the same old push, push, push method of music, morning talk shows, and advertisements. How should they do this? Who knows... maybe it would involve a website that is controlled by user votes on what to play next based on a large library? Maybe it would allow fans to have their own hour of music played, so others are curious to listen in? In any event, the writing is on the wall... adapt or slowly fade away bleeding...

whats radio? I agree with the first talkback, save for 88.9 and maybe 91.7, radio doesnt exist for many people anymore. Decades of shoveling the same music chosen by a "program director" are coming to an end. The older generations may be used to the radio, but i think its safe to say that 90% of the younger generations do not even listen to it.

There's no saving grace to the Milwaukee radio market. There's just too many people in this area that like the classic radio format. And sadly, radio will never compete with the internet. The radio is going the way of print media. What's the point of listening to the radio? It's mostly advertisements. Slacker Radio on my BlackBerry plays a personalized radio station with no commercials. It also has about 100 preset radio stations. Beats local radio, hands down.
