What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published April 10, 2007 at 2:58 p.m.

The next time you pick someone up at the airport, do your guest (and me) a favor -- don't take I-94, take 794 and the Hoan Bridge into Downtown. This, of course, assumes that your destination is Downtown, and truly applies for us Downtown neighborhood dwellers and business people.

The reasoning here is simple. The views, landmarks and general aesthetics of this drive are far more appealing than the boring nature of the I-94 drive into Downtown.

If you believe in the "never have a second chance to make a first impression" adage, you'll jump on this tip for your next airport pick up. Milwaukee looks amazing from this view and this drive home presents our community in a wonderful light.

Here's the rundown. The next time you drive to Downtown from Mitchell International take Howell to Layton and then get on 794 North. 794, of course, takes you over the Hoan Bridge and into the heart of the city. The views are breathtaking. You'll see the Milwaukee Art Museum, Discovery World, Summerfest, Lake Michigan, countless cranes that scream "Milwaukee is growing," Miller Park to your left and several other landmarks, too. It's a great drive, especially when the sun is shining.

So, that's my Milwaukee tip of the day. Try it and let me know what you think. And thanks to Dean Amhaus and Gary Petersen for the reminders.

My only problem with taking visitors over the Hoan is when coming into downtown, the first thing people see is the old dirty, industrial parts of Jones Island. Plus, once the car fills with the fumes from MMSD, it turns a picturesque view into an uncomfortable moment of having to explain the smell isn't coming from you...

I drive over the Hoan every morning/evening commuting from Cudahy to UWM. Even as a drunk college kid, I can still appreciate the view. Also very nice at night. (Especially in the summer, when the fest grounds are lit up!)

Even if your final destination is not downtown Milwaukee, but you're headed north or west of the city, take I-794 and see our beautiful skyline and lake...then take I-794 west to I-94 west or I-43 north (when the ramp opens after construction). Hwy 794 and I-794 highlight everything Milwaukee is...the quaint and growing Bay View neighborhood followed by our majestic lake and non-overbearing skyline accentuated by the Burke Brise Soleil at the MAM.
