Maybe I need a helmet. Or wine. Wine tastes like soapy water to me. I wish I liked wine. Wine vs. whine. I know how that shakes out today.

Bradford Beach group unveils new design ideas

Friends of Bradford Beach, a group formally supported by Milwaukee County's The Park People, debuts a new rendering of its vision for Bradford Beach and a model of its dramatic new playground and water garden area Saturday at the Bradford Beach Jam.

OMC has the first photos of the design, and complete models will be available for public viewing Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The group, which includes OMC's Jeff Sherman, started a year ago and shares the idea that the lakefront needs an area that is interesting enough to attract kids and families for outdoor play, imagination and discovery.

The group unveiled initial plans for a dramatic new vision for Bradford Beach in May, and has worked closely with Milwaukee County in honing its plans for a huge playground and water garden near the Bradford Beach Pavilion.

James Donnelly of The Design Office has completed the new model which will be displayed Saturday, and is available on his Web site.

More than $5,000 in private money has been raised, and Saturday's event will offer opportunities to purchase beach towels supporting the project. Jam goers also can sign petitions that support the project, which will promote awareness, appreciation, knowledge and stewardship of water resources, local history, ecology and fun.

Money raised at Saturday's event will be used to pay for continuing design and plan development required to present a grand plan for approval by the Lakefront Development Advisory Committee and the Milwaukee County Board. The new playground area could be completed by fall 2006.

To reach Friends of Bradford Beach, contact Committee Chair Deborah Lukovich at (414) 803-3229 or dlukovich@wi.rr.com. The Design Center's Bradford Beach project Web site is designoffice.com/watergarden.

Barry Stuart said: The design may be nice, but there are some other needs that must first be addressed. First is administration. Our County Board of Supervisors can't even run a lemonade stand, much less a beach! County Executive Walker has suggested that the parks be given their own elected board. If we can find enough competent, resourceful people to staff it, that wouldn't be a half bad idea. Second, bring back the lifeguards. Beaches staffed with lifeguards have much more usage than unstaffed beaches, My case in point is Racine's North Beach. When I was there a couple of weekends ago, it was extremely busy. Third, clean sand and water. And fourth, contract with a concessionaire who has solid experience in food preparation. A simple, but well-prepared menu goes a long way to make a beach popular.

kk said: Well first they will need to figure out a way to get rid of that dead fish stench. I don't care how cool the design is... no one is going to sit and smell that gross scent and enjoy themselves. So maybe some $ can be used to clean up the dead fish problem first with some decent CLEAN sand!

Rebecca Smith said: I've been down to the lake a lot lately and I have not seen any of this gang, loitering activity that CONCERNED is talking about. As far as traffic and congestion, HELLO, it's a popular place in the summer. Do you propose that they build wider roads?? Our lakefront is (aside from the smell sometimes) a wonderful place to hang out and have fun. I think this project will only enhance all of the wonderful things currently there.

CONCERNED said: Parking, Traffic congestion, and loitering/littering/gang activity, unruly youths are the result of this plan. Is Lincoln Memorial Drive going to be a cruising destination or a thoroughfare? Someone needs to decide?
