Iron Horse hosts annual BUILD bike auction Thursday

The Iron Horse Hotel will host the second annual BUILD Bike Auction on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m.

The auction is the culmination of the BUILD program, which seeks to teach high school students a valuable trade. Students were put into teams and given 100 days and $2,000 to rebuild a Honda CB175, which will be sold at this live auction in The Yard.

Other auction items include a barrel of the hotel's proprietary Barrel 1907 Whiskey, a farm-to-table style dinner for eight and a "Promise Not to Stop When I Say When" tasting dinner and room romance package. All proceeds benefit the BUILD program.

Bike to Work Week events

Don`t feel like you need to ditch your car. The overall goal is participation. Don`t feel bad if you can`t ride all seven days, but don`t give up after only one. Take small steps towards enjoying riding a bike. If you find a problem, ask around for a solution; odds are someone has already figured it out. Bike to Work Week may not convert you to a spandex-loving gear head, but it might provide you with a new, fun weekly goal.

Michael Valenti`s poster art has an eccentric element that fits the absurd reaches of his subject matter: bicycling and the riders and venues of the great European races. Those drawings caught the attention of Ken Hanson, a principal in Hanson Dodge Creative. The firm hired Valenti to create a poster to promote Midwest BikeShare, the effort to bring a short-term bicycle rental system to Milwaukee.
