A new eatery, Brooklyn Bob's LLC at 839 W. National Ave., is scheduled to open its doors April 11. Bob Zaptin, of Brooklyn, and his wife Jeannie are first-time restaurant owners. Bob has been a truck driver for 28 years while Jeannie has been an AutoCAD operator for the past 18 years, a job she will retain while her husband runs the new business.

"It's something I've wanted to do for a long time," Bob Zaptin said. "I got to the point where I was financially able to do it." When the space that used to be Flying Saucer Café was available for lease, he saw it as a prime opportunity.

The new shop will serve breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. The breakfast menu has all the bright and early classics -- eggs and ham, eggs and sausage, eggs and fried bologna, just to name a few, and of course, hot coffee. The food won't sit under a heat lamp; whatever you order, Zaptin will make it fresh, he promised.

The lunch menu offers customers a wide selection of sandwiches and subs that will also be made with plenty of high-quality meats and cheeses. Chicken Parmesan, pizza and meatball subs are just a few on the list, along with a variety of cold cut sandwiches.

Because the space previously housed a café, not too many changes were necessary. "Basically, I'd say it was 70 percent done already," Zaptin said, adding that the previous occupants had taken good care of the place. The kitchen hood system, an oven, stove and a few more tables were the main pieces added. To give it a hint of his native city, black and white photos of Brooklyn and Washington Roebling's famous bridge adorn the walls. The window is lettered like the city skyline, including the bridge.

Although changes to the interior were minimal, there are a few adjustments that Zaptin will have to get used to with this new endeavor. He said that, right now, the most exciting aspect of starting this business is setting it up. "Being my own boss is going to be nice," Zaptin said. "I can do what I want."

One part-time employee will be helping him out; otherwise, Zaptin will take the orders, cook and do other duties. "It's gonna be a one horse show," he said.

Call Brooklyn Bob's at (414) 389-9791. Customers can fax orders to (414) 389-9788 for pickup.
