Canal Street can ease Opening Day traffic

The Milwaukee Department of Public Works has designed a system that will expedite the traffic entering and leaving Miller Park. The system is being implemented on Canal Street just east of Miller Park.

Currently, Canal St. has two-way traffic with two lanes of operation provided in each direction, and under normal conditions will operate in this manner. During events at Miller Park when people enter stadium parking lots, the new system will change the lane configuration on Canal Street to three eastbound lanes and a single westbound lane to get traffic into the stadium parking lot more efficiently.

Conversely, when stadium events are over, the affected portion of Canal Street will have three westbound lanes and one eastbound lane to move traffic out of the parking lots and back to the freeway ramps. To implement this change, there will be special overhead lane control signs and pavement markings. Instead of the standard double yellow centerline and white lane lines to delineate the lanes, all lane lines will now consist of short dashed yellow lines. Additionally, the lanes which motorists can use will be marked on several sign bridges, with a green arrow signal indicating which lanes can be used, and a red "x" marking which lanes drivers cannot use.

The lane use pattern will be controlled by the Milwaukee Police Department who assist with traffic control during stadium events. There will also be a lighted sign located to the east on Canal Street to alert motorists that a stadium event is taking place, providing a warning of potential traffic delays and assist them with route selection. Last year after the opening of Canal Street, the lane pattern was implemented using traffic cones. The new advanced control system will allow the change in traffic pattern to be easily implemented on game days, and should make getting into and out of the parking lots much easier.
