Jazz in the Park, a Thursday night fixture for years in Cathedral Square Park, debuted its new season with a new rule: no carry-in alcohol. Although chilly temperatures may have hurt the turnout as much as the new policy, the folks on hand seemed to enjoy the proceedings. Here is a sampling of photos from the event.

I am for the no-carry in, simply because it helps promote local businesses and it may deter those that come just to get tanked. However, I do not think that the vendors should be selling bottles at the restaurant prices. There's no reason why we shouldnt be able to purchase a bottle of wine for our group for something closer to retail price. You may say well dont drink at all and yes that is fine, but I think there needs to be a little bit of compromise. We dont bring in our own drinks and You dont charge $25 for a $9 bottle of wine. Everybody wins. Right?

I couldn't agree with the last two posts more. Even with "non-profits", money plays a huge role. If the new law passes, and Jazz tries to enforce the no-carry in policy, then we will see for sure. By the way, the Police Chief was quoted several times that he doesn't want to (need to), nor does he have the resources to police an event such as Jazz. If the people who police the laws didn't care about the no-carry-in law...who tattled? Hmmm.....

Sorry to disagree but money plays a role even with nonprofits. The question is did vendors play a role in the decision to enforce the regulation? Who knows? I think carry-ins are a delightful tradition, promotes picnic atmosphere, and isn't necessarily responsible for binge drinking. It is true that Wisconsin has a problem with alcohol consumption but Jazz in the Park is not ground zero. Galleries aren't suppposed to be giving away booze on Gallery Night without a permit. Who's enforcing that?

ozricale, East Town is a non-profit organization, but there is clearly a financial motive here. Did you read about the East Town opposing a measure by the Wisconsin state legislature to give events like this an exemption from the drinking restrictions? Staying in compliance with the law is apparently not the primary motivation here....

A bunch of really dumb comments here. Jazz In The Park is a NON-PROFIT organization. Nobody is "making money" from this. The carry-in of alcoholic beverages is ILLEGAL and has become an issue because of popularity. Read about it here: http://www.easttown.com/categories/5-jazzinthepark/documents/27-beverage-policy
