OnMilwaukee.com designer, Jason McDowell made national headlines last week on PBS NewsHour and Buzzfeed for his creative 2009 Halloween costume based on a piece colloquially referred to as "Molotov Man" or "Flower Bomber" by the street artist, Banksy.

The PBS article, titled "Can't decide what to be this Halloween? How about a Banksy" compiled a showcase of five different costumes plus a short Q&A with each costume designer, including McDowell. The Buzzfeed article, titled 17 Brilliant Art History-Inspired Halloween Costumes, also featured the costume among it's collection and has received over 22,000 likes as of this posting.

The costume was part of OnMilwaukee's annual and mandatory Halloween dress up day in which all of the staff unleashes its creativity and suppresses its embarrassment for the day. The fun culminates in costume contest voted on by the staff.

"It didn't win the costume contest, which is a f***ing travesty. I'm still pissed," tweeted employee, Nick Barth.

"It took me by surprise the first time it went viral on Tumblr," said McDowell, "and then I was even more surprised when it came back the next year. People remembered it."

The surprises continued. "It's a strange feeling that even four years after I threw the costume together to confuse my coworkers and impress my small group of friends it is still attracting attention, now from large media outlets who want to know more about the process behind it."

"I kind of wish I spent more time on it now," continued McDowell. "It just goes to show if you’re going to spend time doing something, you gotta do it right."

More details about the costume can be found on his blog, littletinyfish.com.
