Good news for residents of eastern Downtown. On Tuesday, the Common Council voted to allow residents of the area bounded by Prospect Avenue to the east, Milwaukee Street to the west, Wells Street to the south and Ogden Avenue to the north to keep their vehicles parked on city street for up to five days without being ticketed or towed.
At the moment, residents of that area are required to move their cars every 24 hours or risk being towed and ticketed. Under the new rules, residents must still have an overnight parking permit and obey other parking rules.
The resolution was sponsored by Ald. Robert J. Bauman, who said, "In effect, if we didn't approve the extension (of the pilot project area) we're telling those residents without off-street parking that they need to keep driving their cars to work every day, keep adding to exhaust and air pollution, or else they're facing a ticket or a tow."
Bauman told OnMilwaukee.com that to prevent problems with snow plowing, the rule does not apply during the winter parking rules period (Dec. 1-March 1).

This is a really good start. I live in this area and when I first moved here, I left my car on the street for three days while on a business trip. I was not aware of the parking restrictions so I returned to find my car with a big warning sticker on it. I now have a spot in the parking garage but this will help a lot of other people in the area. I spoke with Alderman Bauman this past summer about resident only parking similar to what they have in the Lakeview neighborhood in Chicago. During Bastile Days and Jazz in the Park it gets very competitive for parking spots. He informed that resident only parking is not allowed in Wisconsin but they were testing a program on the East side. Glad to see some politicians still listen to the public. I have noticed people in the area ignoring the winter parking rules this year and an easing of the enforcement.

Well, considering the neighborhood, there a mostly apartment buildings, and a few business offices there, both with limited parking availability. Having lived "where the beautiful people live", which by the way is much eaiser described as Prospect Ave, from the Ogden north to about the 2000 block, not south, as the new parking rules dictate. But besides that, most of those apartment buildings, save university and the new kilbourne tower, and to a slight degree Yankee Hill and the 1009, 1029, and 1129 N Jackson apts, have little to no parking. Meanwhile, here in Riverwest, and most of the rest of the city, are houses/duplexes with alley driveways, garages, or parking slabs off street for residents to park in. It's not the city's fault, or responsibility that property owners chose to build a second rental unit where a garage should be, nor that they rent the parking spots out of the range of their tenants. And the one person was right, this needs to be expanded to the entire city, but the city would lose all that precious revenue that goes into the combined total of nearly 15 years to fix two bridges (State & Kilbourn) and City Hall. Never mind if the city actually made people pay more than $3 for a annual daytime parking pass, while charging $12 for a quarterly night pass, they could make up revenue in other ways. It would be nice for someone without any possible off street parking to be able to go on vacation for a few days, or god forbid a family emergency out of town and i don't have to worry about my car being towed, or under 5 parking tickets when i get home.

Shenanigans. City streets are not parking lots...5 days? Are you kidding? This right is being given to people in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the City, meanwhile residents on the near north and south sides that live in just as dense of neighborhoods have to shuffle their cars around every day.

This was made into an "environmental" and "global warming" issue because they knew that no one would stand up and object. How dare ANYONE contest "global warming"?!?!? I support this measure, but to use the argument of pollution and global warming is absurd.

I can't believe they made this into an environment issue. Give me a break. What making everybody mover their car so that the city can actually plaw and make the streets drivable when it snows???
