Former political prisoner and animal rights activist Peter Young is coming to Milwaukee tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 11, to speak at Cream City Collectives, 732 E. Clarke St.
Young was one of the first people ever charged with "animal enterprise terrorism" after he released mink from fur farms in Wisconsin, Iowa and South Dakota in the late '90s. He was wanted by the FBI for seven years before getting captured in San Jose in 2005.
Young spent two years behind bars and was released in February 2007.
The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a vegan potluck, after which Young will speak about his experiences in the animal liberation movement, living underground, and prison life. An 8:30 p.m. screening of the movie "Behind the Mask" -- a documentary about people who risk their lives and freedom to save animals -- closes the event.
There is a suggested donation of $5-$7, with most of the proceeds going to Young and a small amount going to Cream City Collectives. The Riverwest collective's motto is to "provide an accessible community space that will allow for the creation and diffusion of knowledge, ideas and skills, specifically for the growth of radical and progressive social change."

Now that's pretty funny. "Don't worry, Best of Bob Marley, I'll get you out of here! You too, Smooth Jazz Hits!"

"Then, on March 21, a police officer stopped at a San Jose Starbucks and saw a man lift eight music CDs from a counter and tuck them in his coat. A fingerprint check identified him as Young. During a pat-down, the officer discovered a handcuff key taped to Young's belt, apparently so that he could escape, authorities said." Ken -- Good point. I can't speak for arks00, but I don't think it's a matter of arks00 doing nothing so much as it's an observation he or she (I don't know if arks00 is a man or woman) had about why someone with such elitism would put forth so much energy in that cause, but not be concerned about human world hunger. Most of us don't have such drive for one particular cause, so you're probably right in that arks00 isn't doing anything about world hunger on an individual level. But when we see someone so obsessed with saving the minks, we have to wonder how that person is blind to fellow human beings starving to death. Kind of like, "Wow, look at that person freeing the minks. But, wait, look over there, it's a starving child not getting any attention." It would be great if someone with such energy could focus it toward a human level, as opposed to an animal level. Thus, I, too, have very little respect for this Peter Young character. To me, he smacks of elitism and warped criminal behavior.

Z boy - It's probably not too difficult to find a politician who is against world hunger. It always takes me ages to find a suitable candidate to vote for who wants people around the world to starve to death. :) But I still think that arks00 wants to dictate others' actions while personally doing nothing. I don't particularly like seeing abortion protesters, but I would never demand that they abandon their cause and start picking up litter or something.

Or maybe arks00 votes for politicians who share these values.
