Four-alarm fire destroys Pizza Man building
Fire crews continue to battle a four-alarm blaze that has destroyed the building housing Pizza Man restaurant, an East Side institution located at 1800 E. North Ave.
The fire started just after 3:30 a.m. Firefighters from Milwaukee and neighboring departments responded quickly, but two parts of the building collapsed and it has been declared a total loss.
More than 150 firefighters are working the scene this morning along with 35 trucks and other support vehicles. Due to the large presence, nine Milwaukee firehouses are being served by mutual aid from neighboring departments.
All of the occupants of the 10 apartments upstairs were evacuated, officials said. The displaced residents are receiving aid from the Red Cross.
The fire, which also impacted upstairs apartments and adjoining businesses like CUSH lounge, Grecian Delight restaurant and Black and White Cafe, is producing thick smoke in the area and has snarled traffic around the intersection of Oakland and North Avenues.
Milwaukee County Transit System officials have detoured routes 15, 21 and 30 in order to stay clear of the blaze.
We used to go there for za & pitchers of whatever was on special back when it was fairly new. Then I turned into a "wino". They had some great wine-tastings back in the day. Let's not forget that Pizza Man was featured in the top 100 wine bars in Bon Appetit' a couple of yrs ago!! Pretty impressive. sdr
I'm glad that no one was hurt. What about the glorious Pizza Man wine cellar???
Um, Cush did burn down, jakkalope.... as well as Grecian Delight, Black and White Cafe, people' apartments.... How dare you say that you wished another person's business burned down. More like jakka**!
I met Mike, the owner of Pizza Man, a few years ago at a friend's wedding. He was very nice and we all had a good time. He's been in that business for 35+ years and am told he put his heart and soul into it. I can't imagine how he is feeling. The corner will likely end up condos or the such. Personally, if I'm in my 60s, I wouldn't want to have to start from scratch. My condolences to all of the people in that building.
Such a sad thing to read. I used to live above Pizza Man in those apartments back in the late 90's ($325/a month for a one bedroom). Such fond memories of that building and that block. I remember the day I moved into my apartment Beans and Barley burned down across the street. Tragic loss. I am really surprised everyone got out alive.
