Welcome to the second segment of the new and improved Sunday Sound-off, which now features a question, two different perspectives -- then opens up the topic to our readers' responses. Please use the Talkback feature below to contribute your thoughts on the issue.
When Bayshore Town Center opened last fall, critics said that the open-air shopping center was a fine idea for warm-weather months, but that people would be less enthused about shopping there once the cold weather hit.
Since winter is almost over, it's time to decide if the critics were right or not. In your opinion, did the cold weather make Bayshore Town Center less appealing -- or didn't it phase you in the least?
Yes. The thought of trucking around with packages in cold weather and snow was enough to keep me far away from the Bayshore Town Center. This winter, I chose Mayfair, Brookfield Square or Southridge for my mall excursions. Overall, it seems silly to have an open-air shopping center in a city with a six-month winter.
No. Wisconsinites are hearty folks, and a little cold weather isn't enough to stop us from enjoying the great shops and restaurants at Bayshore, including California Pizza Kitchen, Forever 21, Trader Joe's and H&M. I think the new Bayshore is a great addition to the city, regardless of the season.

I went to Bayshore for the first time (after the new opening) last November when it was lightly snowing, the Christmas music was playing and it took me back to my childhood when we would go down to Michigan Ave every year after Thanksgiving to see the store window displays and get fresh gormout popcorn and chocolate. So I love the new format of the outdoor mall...

While Bayshore brought some cold cheeks to shoppers and stollers this winter many people absolutely enjoy it and all it has to offer. The days of the traditional "mall" are numbered for many reasons. People enjoy the sense of community fostered by Bayshore and as Spring and Summer settle in, I am confident that more people will come out to shop, dine, socialize, and enjoy the outdoors.

I heard that there will soon be a Trader Joe's at Mayfair.

If people are having parking problems at Bayshore, I would recommend entering near Sears on the extreme north end of the mall (off Port Washington Rd). You can go around the Sears and park in the structure in the back without any traffic problem. If you find yourself having to drive around the little streets in the mall to find parking, it's probably your fault for not being familiar with the best ways to get in and out. The parking structure behind the food court is the best option in my opinion.

I love the idea of an outdoor mall, and I think, even in the winter, people will be looking to shop /without/ the stuffiness and sterility of Mayfair, even if it is cold. It's like a new "downtown street." With the latest trend in winter, we seem to be getting more tolerable weather around the peak Christmas shopping time, which is really 50% of the success. If I have to go shopping in a mall (nothing beats the convenience and selection of the online world) I'd probably head to Bayshore (it's closer to me, too).
