Welcome to the new and improved OnMilwaukee.com Sunday Sound-off, now featuring a question, two different perspectives -- then opening up the topic to our readers' responses. Please use the Talkback feature below to contribute your thoughts on the issue.
After experiencing our traditional April snow showers, many Milwaukeeans ask themselves why they put up with Brew City's weather. Are you one of them? Do you dream of moving to a warmer climate, where ice and snow are images on television, and Christmas dinners are served on patios? Or, is Milwaukee's weather OK with you?
I don't mind Milwaukee weather. I like living in a city with four seasons, and could never live somewhere with basically the same climate all year 'round. Winter gets to be a drag, but it makes us appreciate the summers that much more. Plus, weather is just weather and it's not enough of a reason to move somewhere else. Milwaukee has a lot to offer so it's worth enduring the winter months.
I would love to live somewhere warm. Winters in Milwaukee suck, and I would love to live somewhere warmer, but a job and/or family keep me here. Someday I would love to live in Florida, Arizona or basically anywhere that doesn't have to deal with below-zero temperatures and feet of snow every year.

The NC weather is generally very nice, but the states' cities dont compare to MKE. if i wasnt from milwaukee i might consider the southwest though.

I completely agree with the first one. I hate winters. They get me incredibly depressed, but they also teach me important virtues like hope and patience. All winter I look forward to spring. All spring I look forward to swimming in the summer, all summer I look forward to the leaves changing in the fall, and all autumn I look forward to that first real snow. It's a cycle that keeps me going. I could never live in a place like Arizona, where a seasonal change is noted by the desert cacti changing from a brown to a greenish-brown. I plan on staying in the midwest my whole life.

On the surface, it may seem ideal to live in warm and sunny weather more often. I grew up in California and never had to deal with snow boots and arctic chills, and it was fine. But after I left California and started to live in other places, I realized that I like having some snow and cold weather every year; it helps me to understand the meaning of seasons and winter. But beyond this, I have grown to love "winter culture" and the consequences of living in the snow belt: seasonal foods and cooking, birds in migration, ships and boats on Lake Michigan after the thaw, a renewed appreciation for spring, astounding imagery, etc. Also important are the cultural traditions, many from Milwaukee's ethnic heritage, that have developed around "winter culture." For all its merits, California doesn't have such a strong connection to the drama of the seasons. I think the snow belt is richer and more culturally complex because of the seasonal variations.

I wouldn't trade our weather and climate for the south any day of the week. I love winter with the exception of a few bitterly cold days. I sleep great because it's cool. I don't suffer from allergies. There is a respite from insects. I don't have to mow the lawn. I love to ski. Why would I trade that for bugs as big as my hand, poisonous snakes, three months of triple digits, and year round sneezing. Hot weather is seriously overrated.
