Sunday Sound-off: Will Water Street change?
"It's all about gnomes, trolls, jolly monks and good beer," says Fat Abbey co-owner, Mike Eitel.

For the most part, the weekend Water Street bar scene is notoriously known as a destination for mainstream college kids and 20-somethings looking to paaaaaaarty. Sure, this crowd overlaps with Brady Street drinkers who frequent places like Nomad World Pub, but the Water Street binger is still in a category of its own.

This week, the Diablos Rojos Group -- which operates the aforementioned Nomad, as well as Café Hollander, Trocadero and more -- will add its unique vision to the Water Street mix.

The Fat Abbey Biercafé is a pub and restaurant with an emphasis on Belgian beers and it will open in the former space of The Lodge, 134 E. Juneau Ave.

Already, local buzz suggests that the place will attract folks to Water Street who wouldn't normally frequent the area -- or haven't in years.

"It should be a mix between the Nomad and (Café) Hollander," says Mike Eitel of the Diablos Rojos Group. "It's all about gnomes, trolls, jolly monks and good beer."

But what do you think? Is a slightly more upscale bar a good fit for Water Street? Will it change the Water Street vibe? Or will Water Street always be Water Street: A destination for drunken idiots?

Fat Abbey will alter the age-old landscape of Water Street. Anything Diablos Rojos opens is trendy and cool, and this place sounds like it will be the same. Because imported beers are more expensive than local taps of swill, the clientele will be more sophisticated, making this bar a place to which someone over the age of 25 might actually go.

Nope, Fat Abbey is just going to be another dumb Water Street bar. This place is going to fill up with chaches just like its neighbors. It would be different if this place opened on Brady Street or in Bay View, but thanks to the location, it will be just like all the other Water Street watering holes. Count me out.
