101. The Mad Bomber of Milwaukee
One of my favorite parts of OnMilwaukee.com is "This Day in Milwaukee History." We built this homepage widget a decade ago and have continued adding to it ever since. Occasionally, it teaches me something, too.
102. Bloomberg Philanthropies' Mayors Challenge names Milwaukee a Top 20 finalist
Mayor Tom Barrett has announced Milwaukee has been chosen as one of the top 20 finalists for the Bloomberg Philanthropies' Mayors Challenge, a competition created to inspire American cities to generate innovative ideas that solve major challenges and improve city life.
103. Fish fry eater picks fight with Barrett, Baldwin
The fish fry at Lakefront Brewery had a little something extra Friday night. Along with the fish, potato pancakes, polka band, cole slaw and beer we had a rumble with Tom Barrett and Tammy Baldwin and an arrest.
104. Staying on top of Old Smoky
One of the enduring memories of my biennial childhood visits to Milwaukee was seeing Old Smoky, a locomotive that once called the city home. Is Old Smoky coming back?
105. Often, I vote early
At first I was like some folks I know who balk at early voting, thinking they'll miss the camaraderie of voting with the hoi polloi on Election Day. Today, when I voted at the Zeidler Municipal Building Downtown I was reminded that, well-meaning as that attitude is, it's faulty.
106. Beeee niiiiine: Calling my first bingo game
Recently, I had the chance to call a bingo game at Potawatomi Bingo Casino. I was warned the bingo players sometimes get surly with "celebrity" callers because they are accustomed to a certain style of bingo calling. I went in nervous.
107. Historic Milwaukee will attempt to assassinate Roosevelt ... again
Historic Milwaukee, Inc. hosts "To Kill A Bull Moose: The Attempted Assassination of Theodore Roosevelt, 100 Years Later," Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Mayor Tom Barrett will take part in the event, which kicks off at 3 p.m. with a re-enactment of the shooting at the hotel's east entrance, where German immigrant John Schrank shot Roosevelt during a presidential speech at the Hotel Gilpatrick in 1912.
108. Election exhaustion
The lead item on the news this weekend was about how much money the two campaigns had raised. I was stunned, but it gave me an idea.
109. Bradley Tech students connect the past, present and future
The Milwaukee Observatory is an impressive, exhaustively-researched public art installation and urban archeology exhibit at Bradley Tech High School. The culmination of Discovery World's 15-week Milwaukee Observatory program, the site contains 16-foot "personal archeology banners," "Faces of the Future" boards with photographs of students holding historical objects and a Cultural Memory House inspired by the 1840 home of Walker's Point neighborhood pioneer George Walker.
110. Ryan provided glimpse of candidacy in 2010
For hundreds of BizTimes readers, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan's debut as an ardent and vocal opponent of the Obama administration came back on Jan. 20, 2010, when Ryan unveiled a video to the attendees of the Northern Trust Economic Trends Breakfast presented by BizTimes.
111. Iron Horse hosts annual BUILD bike auction Thursday
The Iron Horse Hotel will host the second annual BUILD Bike Auction on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m.
112. Abele responds
This week I wrote about County Executive Chris Abele and the abrupt firing of Parks Director Sue Black, and that I was disappointed because I had hopes that he was above all of that political headhunting. I heard back from Abele via a message on my Facebook page.
113. We can see ourselves in the Milwaukee of 32 years ago
It looks like ancient history. At mom's house a few months ago I found this: an August 1980 edition of National Geographic. The distinctive border still a golden yellow but the photographs inside, especially in a 22-page spread on Milwaukee - "More Than Beer" - have a long-lost color to them; an almost unreal range of dull hues.
114. Milwaukee Public Library to host interactive Dr. King exhibit
Milwaukee's Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., will host a special four-day exhibit of The King Center Imaging Project, a traveling digital showcase of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s most influential documents.
115. Men's Health taps Milwaukee trainer for DVD series
Milwaukee fitness trainer and entrepreneur BJ Gaddour has signed on as the face of Men's Health Magazine's new DVD series, Deltafit Speed Shred.
116. Another Milwaukee mystery...
Cody said the corporate sponsors had absolute confidence that their donations would be put to effective use under Black's leadership of the county parks. The question now is, with Black's abrupt and mysterious firing by Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele on Aug. 16, will the corporate sponsors be less inclined to support the county parks?
117. Sue Black let go from Parks position
It is believed that Milwaukee County Parks Director of 10 years, Sue Black, was fired today by County Executive Chris Abele.
118. Civil discourse is a faint memory
From Paul Ryan's speech in Iowa to an exchange right here in Milwaukee, it's clear that civil discourse, much less compromise, appears to be dead in Wisconsin.
119. $1.6 million grant will fund MPM IMAX theater renovation
The Milwaukee Public Museum announced today that it has received a $1.6 million grant from the Daniel M. Soref Charitable Trust to renovate the Humphrey IMAX Dome Theater. Due to the grant, the theater will receive 3D capability by October 2012.
120. Tactical EMS trainer on Sikh Temple shooting
Shortly after I heard the news about last Sunday's Sikh Temple shooting, I couldn't help but think back to my day in April with Milwaukee police offers participating in the Tactical EMS Training class at the Waukesha County Technical College. The scenarios I watched matched up so closely with the real-life shooting in Oak Creek, that I had to give Officer Chad Stiles, the instructor at the class, a call to get his reaction.
121. The doggone legalization of wolf hunting
The DNR said it was OK to use dogs in the hunt for the wolf. There are all kinds of hairs to split about all of this, but basically the rules allow for unlimited use of dogs in hunting wolves.
122. Fund created for victims of Sikh Temple shooting
An online donations page has been created to benefit the victims of Sunday's tragic Sikh Temple shooting.
123. I love Cracovia more and more each August
See the photo above? That's the griddle at Cracovia, loaded - as it always is - with some of the best potato pancakes in Milwaukee.
124. Oak Creek massacre hits home
On a normal Monday morning commute, I drive by the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek along Howell Avenue on my way to work to Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward. But today was not a normal Monday morning.
125. Sikhs for Justice offer $10,000 award to injured policeman
In a statement issued today, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a national human rights organization, celebrated the work of the Oak Creek Police department and vowed to make a $10,000 award to Lt. Brian Murphy, who was injured in the shooting on Sunday.
