The newest Alterra coffee shop opens this Friday morning in the Fifth Ward Foundry Building, 170 S. 1st St., joining existing restaurant tenant, The Social.
Manager Patrick Dempsey says things are on track for a Friday mid-morning opening and for regular hours to begin on Saturday, Jan. 7.
"We're just finishing up some last-minute details, and things are running smoothly," says Dempsey, who is also the manager of Alterra at the Lake.
"Alterra at the Foundry" features a menu very similar to Alterra at the Lake's menu -- although lakefront food lovers will note the menu there will soon be updated -- with similar soups, sandwiches and salads.
New additions at the foundry location are planned for the near future, including tea service (pots of tea instead of cups) and French press coffee service. Otherwise, the coffee selection is the same as the other locations.
The new Alterra will also focus more on desserts, and hopes to get a liquor license in the near future to complement the dessert menu. If granted a liquor license, Alterra at the Foundry would be the first Alterra café to serve alcohol.
The environment looks and feels industrial and "foundry-ish." Dempsey says Alterra owners leased the brand new building in mint condition, complete with spotless concrete floors and white walls, but designers proceeded to customize it into a rustic-feeling foundry complete with recycled scrap metal decor.
"Basically, we're in a new space that was custom made to look old," says Dempsey. "The results are really unique."
Alterra at the Foundry's hours are Monday-Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call (414) 765-9873.

Davey Crockett said: I think the coffee shops that are now in direct competition with the their supplier (ALterra) should consider Alterra's competition. Anodyne and Stone Creek both have better coffee anyways and they wholesale also. I dont understnad why Alterra gets all the publicity in town and boy have you seen all of the grant money they got from the city? Lots! I believe that the city paid for their new property in Riverwest. Nice gift from you and me

Walker said: Yes this area was my namesake. Just as the downtown are east of the river should still be named "Juneautown" and west of the river "Kilbourntown." How bland, vanilla is a name like "West town" or "East Town" yeah real creative, yeah I'm sure no other city in the US has a "West town" or "East Town" real creative.

James K. said: I would agree with Tom. At least it's a home grown business and not some chain and more imprtantly, they rehabilitated an eyesore!! I'm not sure what coffee shop this owner owns, but I know that Bella Cafe and Lava Java both offer a unique cafe experience all their own. It's called competition and if your product is any good than you shouldn't be worried.

tom said: I visited the AC@Foundry today and found it to be anice, enjoyable place to be. More room to stretch, and a great job on the remodeling of the space. Coffee shop owner- what Alterra does is called business! If you served a superior product with a great atmosphere and good service i'm sure people would flock to your shop also. Do not begrudge someone because of their success. Its un-american and smacks of jealously and envy. Be happy that there are people willing to take a chance and invest in MKE, not flee to the burbs.

coffee shop owner said: Alterra shows their greed once again. They can't figure out if they want to wholesale or open coffee shops. They will continue to move in to their wholesale accounts territories. I understand wanting to grow a company but at the expense of your wholesale business and small local coffee shops. just another reason for me go somewhere else. Ward(owner alterra)greed will get you nowhere in this town.
