New Shorewood Alterra opens Dec. 28

The newest Alterra Coffee Roasters cafe opens Tuesday, Dec. 28 in the Village of Shorewood at 4514 N. Oakland Ave.

Located inside the new Cornerstone Building, at the site of a former gas station, the development also houses Thief Wine, North Star Bistro, Boutique B'lou and 25 apartments.

Alterra Coffee Roasters now has 10 cafes in the greater Milwaukee area, with another under development in the Bay View neighborhood of Milwaukee. Its first café, 2211 N. Prospect Ave. opened in 1994 and was fully remodeled this year.

As a Shorewood resident, I, for one, will frequent the new Alterra. Why? 1) The Riverwest location, while architecturally well-constructed, is always crowded in cooler/winter months--I don't want to fight for a place to sit and work. 2) Ever been to the Stone Creek Coffee down the street? There's nowhere to sit (probably 20 seats, at most). While I love their coffee, it's not easily a meeting place. 3) City Market is a great spot for breakfast and lunch, but it's often overflowing with patrons and has a bit of an identity crisis--cafe? Coffeeshop? Bakery? 4) Ever notice how many empty storefronts pepper Shorewood's two main thoroughfares (Oakland and Capitol)? C'mon business!

While I enjoy Alterra, it is a little bit upsetting to see one local establishment encroaching on another (Stone Creek). It was bad enough when Starbucks moved into Shorewood (since moving in on locals is there MO) and up the street from Stone Creek, but now the addition of Alterra seems like a full on assault. I just hope that the community can support both. Sad........

That's wonderful, people, but, again, what about a SOUTH SIDE LOCATION, PEOPLE!!! SOUTH SIDE!!! Somewhere around Southridge Mall would be great. There are a lot of us south siders who would love to frequent an Alterra more often...
