The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Eat & Drink, 2007. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
Bratwurst and other sausages might get more attention from tourists and media types (we can thank a certain stadium race for that), but Milwaukeeans are pretty passionate about burgers, too.
And, they're pretty passionate about Sobelman's.
The former Schlitz tavern, located at 1900 W. St. Paul Ave., serves the best burger in town, according to OnMilwaukee.com readers.
Operating since 1999 in a cozy Cream City brick building on low-key corner, Sobelman's serves Black Angus burgers on tasty buns with three cheeses, jalaenos and fried onions. The bar, which is meticulously clean (they even wipe down the salt shakers), also earns raves for its Bloody Marys. It's the burgers, though, that created a frenzied following and prompted the owners, Dave and Melanie Sobelman, to park their Web site at milwaukeesbestburgers.com.
When the subject of Milwaukee's best burger comes up, a number of venues spring instantly to mind. The people who prefer Sobelman's, though, generally don't like to hear about other contestants. Even though it's tempting to keep the place a secret, they'll always gush at length about the great tasting burger on St. Paul.
