The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2009. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.

The pronunciation varies from customer to customer, but the result hasn't changed in years.

Oakland Gyros, an East Side institution located at 2687 N. Oakland Ave., once again wins the distinction of being OnMilwaukee.com readers' favorite place for Late Night Drunk Eats.

When they get hungry and a bit thick-tongued, some Oakland Gyros customers stumble over how to pronounce the signature sandwich that gives the spot its name. Some use the Midwestern "YEE-roh." Others say "JAI-ROH," which is common on the East Coast. Others say "gear-OH" or even "HERO."

No matter how you say it, Oakland Gyros serves up a tasty tzatziki-tinged lamb sandwich (and other dishes) in the late hours of the evening.

The food is fast, plentiful, satisfying and relatively inexpensive, which explains why so many pedestrians visit in the pre-dawn hours.
