The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2008. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!
Milwaukee is famous for Friday night fish fries, and with so many to choose from, it's amazing that most people still have a top favorite. For the second straight year, OnMilwaukee.com readers chose Lakefront Palm Garden as the best place in the city to chow a fish dinner.
The Lakefront fish menu features beer battered cod ($9.95), perch ($12.95), bluegill ($12.95), breaded shrimp ($12.95), baked tilapia ($10.95) or a combo platter ($12.95). All of the dinners are served with a choice of fries or potato pancakes, cole slaw and bread and butter.
The food, however, is only a portion of the experience. Diners are seated "family style" at large tables, and entertained by the Brewhaus Polka Kings, who gig in lederhosen and strapped with accordions from 6 to 9 p.m.
The Palm Garden fish fry is very popular with families because there is a dance floor where children and adults can dance to live polka ditties mixed with other classic kids' songs like the "Hokey Pokey." It's best to arrive after 6:30 p.m. if you wish to avoid the kid scene.

Eating the Fish Fry at Serb Hall was akin to having a part of me amputated without the luxury of anesthesia

I agree with both kevin and Legallyblonde. Lakefront's fish isn't the best but it's always a great time. You asked for best fish frynot best fish. And I agree that Serb Hall is overrated. Last few times I've been there, the wait takes forever for soggy fish that's easier to drink than eat.

I'm surprised Painted Parrot didn't make the list. They have a surprisingly good fish fry. The coating is light, flaky and slightly peppery. Yum!

Lakefronts perch is very good. I still dont understand the love affair with Serb Hall. Ive lived in Milwaukee for about 10 years now and first finally tried the fish at Serb Hall last year after hearing all the hype for nearly a decade. I was dissapointed when I ordered the walleye. It was cafeteria like. Originally from the Green Bay area, this is one area (fish frys) that NE WI has SE WI beat easily.

I have to say, I voted for Lakefront, but not necessarily because the Fish is the best. I just think it's the best atmosphere for a fish fry. When I think fish fry, I think big church group, or large gathering in a park (fish boil), etc. etc. The Lakefront Brewery seems to be the only place I can find where I can enjoy my fried fish, potato pancakes, and cold beer in the midst of hundreds of others. And let's not forget about the live polka music...come on! It's really a no-brainer. However, i'm sure there is better " deep-fried fish" out there.
