The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2009. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
How the times have changed. There was a time when it seemed that most every fine dining restaurant in America served French cuisine or something based on French food. Nowadays, you can count Milwaukee's French eateries on your fingers.
Luckily for us, French cuisine comes in a number of price ranges and a variety of atmospheres, from the casual -- Trocadero, Chez Jacques -- to the lavish -- Lake Park Bistro and Coquette Cafe.
Predicting a winner in this category is not easy, but Coquette, 316 N. Milwaukee St., edged Lake Park Bistro, 28 percent to 26 percent, for the title. Chez Jacques and Trocadero ranked third and fourth and were separated by a single vote.
Sandy D'Amato's Coquette Cafe has long been a Third Ward favorite for lunch and for the theater crowd. It's warm atmosphere and beloved dishes (like the delicious fiammekueche flatbread pizza) keep folks coming back again and again. Sadly, this year marked the end of D'Amato's Harlequin Bakery, located adjacent to the Milwaukee Street eatery.
