Does the conical shape of the container make them taste better?

Milwaukee's best fries, 2009: Cafe Hollander

The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2009. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. T

Milwaukee's Best Fries is a relatively new category for OnMilwaukee.com's annual "Best Of" survey. Based on the results, it looks like our readers were just as passionate about this potato product as we were.

Thousands of you chimed in with votes, deciding by a large margin that Cafe Hollander, 2608 N. Downer Ave., fries up the best frite in town with its very European, and very tempting, offerings. Part of what makes ordering the huge cone of frites at Hollander such an enjoyable dining experience is the sharing aspect; one order is always way too much for just one eater.

Then comes the tough part: choosing your dipping sauces. It's no easy task, as they've got 11 to choose from. Ketchup? Please. Not here. The closest you'll find is the curry ketchup, but we recommend going all out Euro and ordering mayonnaise or the roasted garlicaoli sauce. Hell, you can order them all -- they're only $.75 a pop.

Here at OnMilwaukee.com, we couldn't agree more that these super thin, upscale pommes frites are the finger food du jour. Cafe Hollander got our vote as well. Here are some of your other favorites.

sorry Z-boy. Wendy's have some sorta weird chemical taste and are probably the worst of all fast food fries. and i really don't care what McDonalds fries their fries in, they were always, and still are, top of the heap. Five Guys are damn good as well.

Cafe Hollander, in general, isn't that great. The fries are typical, if not somewhat mushy. My favorite fries are either McDonalds (fresh from the fryer) or Red Robin... yummy and bottomless.

I repeat: McDonald's fries were some of the best about 30-plus years ago. Somewhere down the line, they switched oils or something, and they're barely edible these days. The fast food place to beat in this day and age is Wendy's. They easily have the best fast food fries on the market, hands down.

I am pretty sure Cafe Hollander & Trocadero ( all the Diablos Rojos places) have the same fries. They are good but not great. Not even close the vlamms frittes you get an the frittes stands in Amsterdam.
