Dave's favorite grilled cheese.

The best grilled cheese in town

For the seventh straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by the restaurants of Potawatomi. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2013."

Ah, the grilled cheese sandwich. The stuff dreams are made of. I've eaten them all over the world.

Saturday night I had the best grilled cheese sandwich I have ever had. Ever. Not kidding.

I had it at Charlie's a bar in the Third Ward right around the corner from the Broadway Theatre Center. I occasionally drop in when I'm on my way to review a play. It has great burgers.

But Saturday night I ordered the five-cheese grilled cheese and paid an extra buck for one more kind of cheese.

Holy smokes.

They set it down in front of me and I gasped in anticipation. Two slices of Sciortino's Italian bread, grilled to just crisp enough.

Inside, and just spilling over the edges, was a stack of cheddar, American provolone, jack, Swiss and Gouda cheeses. It wasn't huge by any means but was, instead, easy to eat.

Never, anywhere have I had a grilled cheese sandwich so good. And just $8 – with fries. Go. Try it. Love it.

If you think it's good now, imagine how much better it would be if it was made with bread from Nino's!

Best ever is Sazz's grilled cheese....cheese, tomato and BACON stacked between 2 pieces of Texas Toast...my arteries are clogging up just thinking about this. :)
