Milwaukee's best hidden gem, 2010: Barnacle Bud's

The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2010. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.

It was the easy winner in this competition, although Barnacle Bud's isn't easy to get to. In fact, if you don't know where you're going, you'll think you're not even on a public street as you work your way to 1955 S. Hilbert St.

That's why Barnacle Bud's Web site allows visitors to click on a "Where the Hell Are You?" button.

Once you get there, you'll find a relaxed hideway that looks more Key West than Brew City, an oyster bar with a trademark Bloody Mary. Of course, there's a full menu of sandwiches and entrees.

With the un-October warmth of the last few weeks, it's best to enjoy one of the most comfortable outdoor eating areas in town while you can.

OnMilwaukee.com editors' choice: Ilija's Place

I agree the food sucks but BB's atmosphere still doesn't make up for it. Yes it is a great place for a beer from their limited selection out on the patio, but there are so many great patios in Milwaukee that have much better food & drinks. With that being said...I still enjoy the BB experience.

Eddie420819 - Sorry I think you missed the point this is OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2010 not Best Bar or Best Outdoor Drinking Spot. Best hidden gem? - Sure, nice place to chill and have a drink. BUT THE FOOD SUCKS!!! Owners call Sysco foods or something because your food is terrible. With a location like that the owners should be ashamed of themselves.

I concur. Baranacle Bud's is about the atmosphere and the drinking. Not a culinary experience. Which is another reason why it is great. Its not trying to be something its not. Try another one of Gene's hidden gems, McKiernan's 37th and Grant!

I agree this place is MKE's best kept secret! Gene and Vicky are wonderful and gracious hosts. I concur with Midtwownlove comment .. UNFORTUNATELY .. the food leaves a lot to be desired. Sad to say, but I have never had a good meal there.

If you're going to Barnacle Buds strictly for the food, you've completely missed the point of the place.
