Milwaukee's best Indian, 2010: Maharaja

The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2010. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.

Milwaukee has a variety of great Indian restaurants, but for the third year in a row, OnMilwaukee.com readers declared the East Side's Maharaja to be the very best.

The daily lunch buffet offers a large selection of Indian soups, vegetarian favorites like palak paneer (spinach cooked with homemade cheese), chicken and beef curries and gulab jamun -- those little fried dough balls dipped in sweet syrup.

Dinners at Maharaja feature an extensive East Indian menu crowded with curries, meats and breads baked in a traditional tandoori oven.

OnMilwaukee.com editors' choice: Mayura

Runners-up:
2. Taste of India
3. Bombay Sweets
4. Tandoor
5. Mayura
6. Saffron
7. Bombay Louie's
8. Asian Delights
9. Ujala Tandoori

OMG! Based on the first two comments, I went and checked the 2009 and 2008 articles. Two of the paragraphs in the 2010 article are verbatim copies of ones used in both the 08 and 09 articles! That's even more lame than including a non-Indian restaurant in Kenosha...

In last year's talkback Asian Delights made the list, and I pointed out that it has been closed for years. Are people really voting for these places? or is OMC recycling old lists?

A couple of things to fact-check: (1) Bombay Louie's is a restaurant featuring steaks, seafood, and pasta. No Indian food is served there; (2) I'm pretty sure Ujala Tandoori is still closed and didn't reopen (as of last year it had been clsed for a couple of years or so). There are a couple more Indian places around town not mentioned on the list, including a couple of new places in the Hales Corners area.
