Milwaukee's best Mexican, 2011: Botanas
Your votes are in, Milwaukee, and you have selected the winners of OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2011. We're announcing the results of this readers' poll, including our editors' pick, in a series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
For the fifth straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by Concordia University. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2011."
Once again, Milwaukeeans picked Botanas, 816 S. 5th St., as being a cut above the other Mexican restaurants.
Almost always bustling, the massive Botanas continues to deliver good food, lighting fast. (Sometimes too fast?)
In addition to traditional Mexican cuisine, Botanas also has an impressive seafood menu including spectacular fish tacos and signature shrimp soup served with Mexican rice.
The atmosphere is colorful, lively and fun for all ages, from families to out-on-the-towners.
The OnMilwaukee.com editorial staff picked Cempazuchi as its favorite of the year.
OnMilwaukee.com editors' choice: Cempazuchi
2. La Fuente
5. Riviera Maya
6. La Perla
8. Cafe Corazon
9. Bel Air Cantina
10. Jalapeno Loco
12. La Estacion
13. El Beso
15. El Fogoncito
Remember the Acapulco restaurant on National? They had the best enchiladas in town, bar none.
I do not get the obsession with Botanas. For authentic mexican, you can't go wrong with Cempazuchi or Riveria Maya. Tex-mex is La Fuente I guess. I'm very impressed with the tacos at BelAir Cantina, but that's more Cali-Mex.
Any list of Milwaukee Mexican food that doesn't include the El Rey Deli isn't much of a list at all.
Botanas' Firecrackers might be the best mexican dish in Milwaukee. Their margs leave a little bit to be desired though. How about a fresh one with real agave and fresh lime juice? They have a wonderful assortment of tequilas to select from.
