The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2009. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
Sadly, the economic woes of 2009 saw the struggle and demise of several Milwaukee restaurants. But, as the list below suggests, the news was not all bad. Milwaukee welcomed a healthy list of new restaurants into the area; several focused on budget-friendly finds like burgers, pizza and sandwiches.
Honeypie, with a new take on Midwestern comfort food, takes the crown as this year's Reader's Choice for Best New Restaurant.
Opening in May 2009, Honeypie re-claimed the Bay View space formerly occupied by Annona Bistro. The home-style eatery is a joint effort by restaurateurs Scott Johnson, Leslie Montemurro and Adam and Val Luck, who post lunch, dinner and brunch menus focused on local meats, eggs and vegetables.
Customer favorites include the homemade pot pies, dessert cupcakes and classics like pork loin and kielbasa sausage. Perhaps the hottest seller, the Davenport, is an open-faced turkey sandwich served with horseradish mashed potatoes, cranberry jam and a creamy cheese sauce.

Honeypie really needs to get their service together. My brunch there was a similar experience, with numerous items sold out on an already small menu. The food (which was good) took forever to come out (longer than Comet, which I'm usually ok with). And it took a long time to get our check, even after the table was cleared. Worst was that, in our hurry to leave, we didn't realize we were way overcharged on our bill (which we paid in cash). We called the next day to explain the situation and the manager at Honeypie said they would send out a gift card and we were fine with that. After 2 weeks and no card we called the restaurant back up. We were informed that the manager we spoke to no longer works there and there was nothing they could do. Sadly, I don't think I will be venturing back for a while now.

I too really miss Annona - and I honestly cannot believe that Honeypie won best new restaurant. I have been there three times and each time the service was atrocious and the food only mediocre. The the third and final time I went there it was for brunch. It was 9:45, they had already run out of two of the menu items and it took an hour for my fiancee and I to get our meals, which were very basic egg dishes. We will never be patronize Honeypie again and we do tell all our friends about our experience. It is truly a shame, because we love Comet and had high hopes for Honeypie, we are Bayview residents and we want to support our local restaurants, but Honeypie is in our opinion, horrible and Annona is very missed.

I loved Annona, especially the art they displayed. We bought several pieces from the local artists. That being said, I equally enjoy Honeypie. I wish they made heir biscuits during the week... they are my favorite! I crave them.
