Milwaukee's best pizza, 2008: Pizza Man
The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2008. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!
When it comes to pizza and OnMilwaukee.com's annual "Best of" contest, well, there is an undisputed heavyweight champ.
Pizza Man. The fact is, this North Avenue eatery wins pretty much every year. This year, it garnered nearly 16 percent of the votes. In 2006, Pizza Man and Zaffiro's went head to head in an OnMilwaukee.com Milwaukee Challenge and your favorite won unanimously.
The East Side landmark, a fixture for nearly four decades at 1800 E. North Ave., claims victory year after year against worthy competitors like Zaffiro's, Balistreri's, Lisa's, Calderone Club, DeMarini's and Palermo Villa.
The rustic ambience of the place, along with characteristics like the trademark cracker-like thin crust and extensive wine list, make Pizza Man a perennial winner in this category.

6. Classic Slice
7. Olive Pit
8. Dom & Phil DeMarini's
9. Palermo Villa
tie. Pizzeria Piccola
11. Calderone Club
14. Mama DeMarini's
15. Oakland Trattoria
What about Pizza Shuttle? The toppings there are endless and after moving to the Chicago suburbs where pizza with BBQ sauce is the strangest thing you can find, I really miss Shuttle! And their crust is the best in town.
Try Tenuta's pizza. Great pizza, amazing atmosphere. Clement Ave in Bayview. Should be on this list!!
Pizza Man? Over-rated! Clap, clap, clap clap clap. Oakland Trattoria has better pie.
Zaffiro's USED to be my favorite but...2 things bother me: 1) They don't seem to scrape their ovens out so their pies are usually a tad burnt--at least somewhere, and 2) They can't seem to cut entirely through the pizza enough. I usually end up having to recut it...not a huge deal but, c'mon...Ballistreri's in Tosa is my new fave....
I would be far more willing to eat at Pizza Man if my co-worker hadn't been advised by his bank to cancel his debit card because an employee of Pizza Man had been apparently stealing card numbers.
