The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2009. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
Milwaukee's vegetarian dining options expanded in the past decade, and yet, the classic East Side establishment Beans & Barley gets the gold. Beans opened in 1979 in its current location, but the structure was rebuilt in 1993 after a massive fire.
Beans is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It serves up a variety of veggie items, including the tempeh reuben, grilled cheese, balsamic tofu sandwich, grilled vegetable sandwich and Mexican dishes like burritos and quesadillas. The menu also features poultry options.
Beans' prices are affordable, with nothing on the menu more than $9.
OnMilwaukee.com editors' choice: Riverwest Co-op
Runners-up:
2. Palomino
3. Casablanca
4. Cafe Manna
5. Water Buffalo
6. Twisted Fork
7. Abu's
8. Hooligan's
9. Karma Bar & Grille

Abosulutely LOVE Beans and Barley! In the many years I've been eating here, I've never had a dish that I did not like plus they also offer non-vegetarian meals which are equally delicious.

Good call, OMC staff! You got it right with your vote for the Riverwest Co-op as best vegetarian food. I'm not picking on Beans & Barley -- which is good but not great -- it's just that the Riverwest Co-op is tastier, and if that's the criteria to make the "best of" list, then the Co-op should have won.

I am curious, while the food is good there, has anyone actually ever seen a Beans & Barley worker smile? I no longer go there because generally the employees are rude.

ah yes, what the readers missed completely the OM.com staff corrected. Hands down the best vegan place in the city is the secret little nook of the Riverwest Co-op. Hand made tamales. The vegan Philly...to die for.
