Don Quijote closed yesterday, July 10.
Owner Elena Salas opened the Spanish restaurant on Downer Avenue in 1996 and helped introduce Spanish tapas to Milwaukee. In 2003 she moved to Walker's Point and opened at 704 S. 2nd St.
The menu featured authentic Spanish dishes like gazpacho, paella and tortilla Espanola.

I completely forgot about this place. Did they ever advertise? Seeing an ad from time to time would help put them ahead in my mental list of restaurant to choose from when figuring out where to go. I'm sorry but not advertising will doom you in the end in this age of competition for restaurant patrons.

Even before they moved the food was inconsistent as best. I remember going there several time and half the appetziers were not available. It is quite easy to be the best Spanish or Tapas restaurant in Milwaukee when you are the only one.

I don't get it. Everytime a bar/restaurant closes everyone cries because it was "their favorite place." If you want these places to remain open, you and your friends need to support them by GOING THERE and quit frequenting the chains.

She lost her lease on Downer; hoped location near other Latin dining and theatre across the street would help. No such luck. She is a great cook!

All my favorite places have gone away. Dancing Ganesha, African Hut, now Don Quijote. In their place have popped up horrible chain eateries and franchises. I used to brag about these dining gems, but now there's a lot less to brag about.
