Edgar's Calypso, the Caribbean restaurant at 628 N. Water St., has closed.
Owner Michael Dillon opened the restaurant in fall 2007 in the Downtown space that formerly housed Swank. Its menu pulled influences from Jamaican, Cuban and other Caribbean cuisines. Its last night in operation was Saturday, Feb. 28.
Ald. Robert Bauman said he thought the calypso theme was "too narrow a niche to survive."
A new bar, JC's Pub and Grill, will take over the space this month. License applicant Jonathan V. Cervero said his establishment will serve lunch and dinner.
Stay tuned to OnMilwaukee.com for more details as they develop.

Went in to JC's for it's first week...and noticed that there seem to be a lot of the same people around that were there for my terrible experiences when it was Edgar's. It makes no sense - wasn't the problem we all had with the sub-par service and mediocre food? Now the food is nothing special at ALL, and nothing exotic, probably made by the same staff that couldn't get a sandwich right as Edgar's. Now we are going to give them a pass for being new? They should have taken some more time and focused on doing something that was just a little different.

That's the problem with restaurants that open and close in this town. Owners get what they think is a great idea that they and a few friends like. They do zero market research, they spend no money advertising sinking all their money into designing the space and no money attracting paying customers. I don't know if it's ego or stupidity or both. Why would you want to take a measure of your life savings and put it on a craps table. Caribbean theme in a cold weather city in a bad spot with zero parking, blocks away from some of the best restaurants in town? I'm shocked they made it that long.

Hey Dutch: Why not use your own name instead of hiding behind someone else's nickname. I know both the owner and the managers and from an outside perspective they did the best job they could. Your right, location is the heart of the problem as well as parking. Customers in Milwaukee dont want to have to find parking or pay for parking for a casual restaurant. Maybe if your going out for a night on the town and a more upscale place. Lets also mention the current economic situation and how hard it is for a small business to make it here in Milwaukee. Ardor closed just a few months ago around the corner from Edgar's, so maybe that block and area is not a good fit for a casual place. I have also seen/heard plenty of adverts from Edgars in either onmilwaukee, Shep Express, Milwaukee Mag, and a few radio stations. I work for a law firm across the street and have met the managers and owner several of times and everyone seemed to be pretty experienced. - G

i hate to say this, but i don't feel all that sorry for restaurant owners who refuse to advertise. if one has the money to open a restaurant in the first place, then they should shell out a few more bucks and put some coupons or something in the shepherd or the onion. as a former worker in advertising, i can say with confidence that one cannot afford to expect their business to boom simply by "word of mouth."
