There's no lack of things to do here in Milwaukee, especially during the summer. But, here are a couple of events of which to take special note.

Don't miss the best of what Milwaukee has to offer. Sign up to receive the OnMilwaukee Weekend Preview in your inbox every Thursday.

SURG Block Party

The fourth annual SURG Block Party will take place on Sunday Aug. 24 from 3-9 p.m. on Milwaukee Street.

This year the block party will support the Froedtert Hospital Foundation, which raises money for sick children. The Kris Crow Band will be performing, along with DJ Devast8 and the Bucks dancers. Food and drink will be provided by SURG Restaurants including Carnevor, Distil, Gouda’s Italian Deli, Hom Woodfired Grill, Mikey’s and Umami Moto.

A dunk tank will provide additional entertainment, along with wine, sushi and cocktail demos.

Eat Local Resource Fair

Whether you’re an established locavore or simply interested in learning more about navigating Milwaukee’s local food system, you’ll want to mark your calendar for Saturday, Sept. 6 when the Eat Local Resource Fair returns to the Urban Ecology Center in Riverside Park.

The Eat Local Resource Fair, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., is an annual opportunity to celebrate local food. The event offers tools, tips and ideas to help Milwaukeeans eat locally all year long.

Attendees will be able to meet and buy products from local vendors, including Angelic Bakehouse, Becky's Bissful Bakery, The Noisy Kettle, Really Goods, Stone Creek Coffee and Top Note Tonics. Canning supplies and equipment will also be available for purchase from Blifferts Hardware.

Free workshops include:

  • Noon: Eating Healthy and Local with Slow Food WISE
  • 1 p.m. : Backyard Fruit Production with UW-Extension
  • 2 p.m.: Almost Cooking with Outpost Natural Foods

Lunch will be available for purchase from local food trucks.

The Eat Local Resource Fair is a collaboration of the Urban Ecology Center and Outpost Natural Foods Co-op with the support of Slow Food WISE.

Her passion for the culinary industry was birthed while balancing A&W root beer mugs as a teenage carhop, fed by insatiable curiosity and fueled by the people whose stories entwine with each and every dish. She’s had the privilege of chronicling these tales via numerous media, including OnMilwaukee and in her book “Milwaukee Food.” Her work has garnered journalism awards from entities including the Milwaukee Press Club.

When she’s not eating, photographing food, writing or recording the FoodCrush podcast, you’ll find Lori seeking out adventures with her husband Paul, traveling, cooking, reading, learning, snuggling with her cats and looking for ways to make a difference.
