Farewell to Frankie's Sammiches and Fajitas Grill (for now)
Today is the last day of business for Frankie's Sammiches, 5300 W. Bluemound Rd. Matt Skalnik opened the restaurant a year ago and sold primarily Italian beef sandwiches, along with burgers, brats and dogs.
According to an employee, the operation will close for good today when all of the food is gone.
"We did the best we could. We gave it a year," said the employee during a phone conversation.
Fajitas Grill, 1673 N. Farwell Ave., had its last day of operations yesterday. Owner and chef Arturo Napoles and his wife, Rachel, plan to reopen the restaurant in a new, yet-to-be-disclosed location.
"We would like to thank all of our loyal fans and community for all its support over the past two years. We have truly enjoyed serving Milwaukee's East Side and Brady Street community," wrote Napoles in an email.
Stay tuned to OnMilwaukee.com for more information about the new Fajitas Grill when it becomes available.

A real bummer!!!! Bluemound road lost a gem. Frankie's quickly became a favorite right after it opened. As soon as you hear it's closed, you start craving one of their amazing combo Italian sausage & beef! DAMMMITT!!!!!!

Very sad to see local places close, but you have to give it more than a year. Most bars/restaurants lose money or just break even the first year.

very sad; we in the neighborhood were pretty good supporters and everyone thought the food was great! there always seemed to be people there - hate to see local businesses fail -- my husband is in mourning right now...any chance they'll re-consider?

I have to admit... Frankie's closing is pretty much the worst thing that's happened to me in a long time. I'd hit that place up for lunch at least once a week. It was the highlight of my work week. This place would have worked great on the East Side or in Bay View... I'm really going to miss it. They were the only place in the city that knew how to make an italian beef. Sammy's sucks, Martino's sucks, Rosati's sucks... Frankie's was it.

I finally found then open once and tried an Italian Beef. It was delish. Not the best venue for that area of Miller Park bars and shuttles, I suppose. I always feel bad when something so local closes.
