A smoke-free Fuel Café might sound like an oxymoron, but according to Fuel co-owner Scott Johnson, it's true. On Oct. 1, almost 14 years to the day since the café opened, it will no longer permit cig smoking.
"It's kind of a big step for us, but we're pretty stoked on the change," says Johnson. "Kind of an end of an era though, and that feels weird."
Earlier this week La Merenda, a Walker's Point restaurant, also announced it will go smoke-free on Oct. 1.
Stay tuned to OMC for a full article about the future of The Fuel, Milwaukee's original hipster coffee shop.

Gregrnel: You nailed it right on the head! That place should have gone non-smoking 15 years ago. I think the "hip" smokers in Fuel alone helped sustain the big tobacco industries. Congratulations, Fuel. I applaud your decision.

Great move by the Fuel, only they should of done it 15 years ago. I mean really kids, how "punk rock" is it to support tobacco companies?

I liked Fuel's smokey, divey atmosphere, and it's sort of depressing that this kind of cafe is going the way of the Tasmanian Tiger. Comet's changed, Node is done, and Fuel is non-smoking. However, I can't complain much. I don't smoke and I'll probably actually go there to eat sometime.

This place CHOSE to go non-smoking. Private owners must retain that right of decision. The Common Council will be wrong if it crams non-smoking regs down our throats.
