Gus's Deli, 733 N. Van Buren St., is closed. Gus's Deli was an abbreviated version of Gus's Mexican Cantina; serving deli style burritos and tacos for the Downtown lunch hour.
Owner Gus Hosseini has been on Milwaukee's bar and restaurant scene since the early 1980s. Initially opening the Unicorn Club in the now vacant Sydney Hih Building, Hosseini opened the first Gus's Mexican Cantina on the ground level of the same building. In 1995, he added an Old World 3rd Street location and in 1999, opened Gus's Deli on Van Buren Street.
The Unicorn -- where Nirvana once played -- closed in the mid-90s followed by each of Hosseini's Downtown Mexican restaurant locations. Currently, Hosseini owns and manages the only remaining location in Franklin opened in 2008.
"We closed Downtown because we opened our Franklin location. We wanted to be able to concentrate on one restaurant and really turn it into something great," Hosseini says.
Gus's Mexican Cantina in Franklin, located at 6514 S. Lovers Lane Rd., is open for lunch and dinner.

I can attest, they are doing a great job at the Franklin location. I went their for a South Suburban Chamber meeting, and then a week later took my wife. Quizically they have one of the best fish fries I've ever had that goes perfect with a bottle of Bohemia Beer.
